Article Submitters, are they really needed?

I've been looking at a few article submitters. I'm looking to get some feedback on what's out there. If you have an article submitter that you are currently using then please reply and elaborate on why and how it is effective for you.

I personally only submit to one article directory. I believe there's some submitters that claim to submit to hundreds of directories. Is that really necessary to see not good, but great results? I've also been thinking of just manually submitting to 10 of the top directories to see how that goes. I have a writing style that's been converting but the sales still just "trickle" in. I may have a day where I get 3 sales and then I won't get any sales for 2 or 3 days....I believe submitting articles to more directories should enhance my chances of getting more views and more sales.

opinions please...

Considering that most article directories are not actively monitored by their owners, except for perhaps the top 10-20, no, which pretty much makes software that can submit to thousands of directories a tad superfluous really.

TPW did a case study on this topic, I'm sure he will post a link to it.

I've tried quite a few article submitters and to be honest their not really
worth it, i'd really only use ezinearticles, articlesbase, goarticles etc, there
really are only a few that even seem like their worth posting on.

They aren't worth it in my opinion because you'd get the same function if you
opened each of the websites in a different tab, and then just copied and
pasted one to the other, this may take 60 seconds longer but it saves $'s in
the long run with all the submission software floating about and the chance
that, as i've experienced in the past the submitters suddenly can't seem to
      connect to the directories.

Submitting to more directories won't necessarily get more sales, i've used article submitters in the past, mainly Article Submitter Pro (articlesubmitterpro.com) which did work, but i've only really seen any good click throughs from a handful of websites, mainly ezinearticles, goarticles, articlesbase etc.

I suppose their good for building backlinks, but really i'd recommend just
      sticking to a handful.

The article websites i used (just in case you want examples):

      Ezinearticles.com
      Goarticles.com
      Articlesbase.com
      Buzzle.com
      Searchwarp.com
      ArticleAlley.com

So overall, if you want more sales, article submitters aren't really the answer,
but i'd say write to more article directories and see how it goes, 100+ submissions
isn't really needed but thats just my own preference.

edit: I'm no expert but thats my two cents (:
