Quick clarification on Hostgator.

The reseller account has unlimited domains so does that mean that registering a new domain is free? included in the monthly fee? or does that mean you can add an unlimited amount of domains to your account.

And if you are just adding domains to your account, are they just forwarded from your main domain? or are they there own individual sites?

Currently I have one site but it is hosted on my main personal site and my minisite is an addon to the account that forwards the url.

You have to pay for each domain,
but they are all treated as individual accounts.

An addon domain basically creates a subdirectory in your main account and can also be accessed as : subdomain.maindomain.com

A parked domain is one which points to the root directory, and has only redirectional value.

you need to purchase domains from sources like : godaddy.com, namecheap.com and 'addon' them to your account

    I use Hostgator.

The reseller account allows you to host unlimited domains...but so does the cheaper hosting packages.

I once had an $8/month baby gator account and hosted 3 different domains. The difference with the reseller account is that you can host all your accounts with separate cPanel accounts. With the cheap one you can't...they are all under the same cPanel.

For what you are looking to do for now, you may not need the reseller account.

To answer you other question about domains, yes you need to purchase the domains from a registrar. Then you point that domain to your host gator hosting account using the DNS settings that Host Gator will provide for you.

also, some of the smaller shared hosting plans now feature unlimited bandwidth and space for under $10 a month.

Use the coupon code of JURY at checkout to get the first month free. I think you have to pick the plan at $7 or so dollars. PM me if you are really interested and I will go to the site and tell you the package name.

The coupon will save you $9.94 off all plans including the reseller plan.

There are cheaper reseller plans than HostGator, you can see some listed here.

Personally, I didn''t have much luck with the Hostgator reseller account. It was fine until I tried to close it then they billed me for two months extra after I sent the tickets in to close it.

Is it true that if you have 2 many unrelated niche domains on a non-dedicated server (hostgator: baby account). That it affects your search engine ranking? Google doesn't like it?

If so what the critical point.... 4...5....6 different niche scopes? (I know there is no exact number but what is your experience)

Isn't that a major reason for a reseller account?

Secondly, for example if I use a one month free hostgator code discount and it expires and then you use a 20% code after the account is closed.... is this possible? Or once you take advantage of their service through a discount code, it's permanent?

It seems like if I sign up for a 1 month program and It expires (no recurring billing) ...would you technically be starting a new program?

I'm sure the hosting companies have already thought about this, but what's the answer?

I've got more than a hundred domain names on the baby account and it all works great. I don't have websites on all of them though. I use a whole bunch as redirects (I suppose you can do that where you buy the domains too -- Godaddy does free redirects), but I like to have them all in one place.

One drawback of the baby account: If I need to give someone access to my c-panel for, say, loading a membership site, they have access to my entire "empire" of domains, which is why I might add a second account for stuff where I need to have other people help me (and maybe even a reseller account so that I can separate out the different c-panels and have different passwords for them.

I can't say for sure, but I don't seem to have trouble with search engine rankings. That's something I'd be curious to hear more about though...

      Anyone know?

      Thanks.

      Elisabeth

P.S.: One more thing: Hostgator has fantastic customer service.

Those domains will just be forwarded to your primary domain, the one used to set up the account.

It will be up to you to create the packages and individual cpanel accounts in your WHM panel.

The benefits of reseller hosting is a separate cpanel for each domain, keeps things running smooth.

You can register your domains anywhere, just redirect them to ***.websitewelcome.com.

You may purchase additional IP's at about $2 a piece per month, and with reseller you can designate your own personal nameservers.

Independant IP's have some effect on rankings, but mostly protects you from other "yahoos" on shared IP's causing problems, (spammers, etc).

      Hope that helps...
