Time For Google To Step Down - Their Best Engineers are Leaving and Market Share is Diminishing

Just released on techcrunch:
Can Google Get Its Mojo Back?

Google's top engineers are leaving the company, search market share is diminishing while it's competitor Bing is rising.

Finally, a strong competitor for the big G? What do you think?

over the last 18 months, their aura has faded and their halo has fallen. Once their arrogance was intimidating and awesome. Now it just seems clueless.

I really hope they're fading.. not because I'm mean, but just because I hate monopolies..
and I don't want them to go home.. I only want them to have a real competitor..

Too much arrogance and too much bureaucracy since Google became the giant that it is today.

as for Bing, if they want to be able to really compete with Google, they have a long way to go.. for example, why the heck won't they implement an AdSense of their own ?

    ..bad marketing, I guess..

God I hope not. For some reason, I find it incredibly hard to rank on Bing. I don't know how it could be any different than Google but all of my sites do unbelievably ****ty on Bing.

Gotta agree with you here. I've had moments where I've hated them, especially with Adwords, but at the end of the day, they are our livelihood. If you get most of your traffic from search engines then you probably don't want Google to go anywhere.

Agreed with Flavius! They acted like they own the internet lately.

    @AFI
It's because we are used to optimize our site in google's way, not in a Bing's way, and we don't know much about Bing yet.

      Apparently it's a lot different.

Google has had what amounts to a monopoly situation for quite a while now and this is never a good thing except for the organization holding the monopoly.

Funnily enough I have noticed on some of my newer sites that I am getting about the same number of search engine visitors from Yahoo as I am getting from Google and Bing is not so far behind.

Well, guess we have to wait and see.

One thing is certain: unless they stop the search results SPAM and LISTEN to what webmasters have to say... they'll have a hard ride.

I have heard rumors that Bing has its own Adsense model, although I could not tell you what it is called.

I don't consider a 1.2% drop in market share "eyebrow-raising" to a company that controls 80% of the market place. I don't even think that it indicates a systematic problem, but could simply be a blip in the numbers.

For the last 18 months, Bing has had a better search product, but the same problem continues to dog Bing, and that is human habits...

People have habitually perceived that Google has the better search product. And it remains easier for them to use Google than to consider alternatives.

Bing has been fighting an uphill battle against Google's perceived value for more than 18 months. And they will continue to fight against that for probably several more years.

Their current ad campaigns are not proving useful in changing consumer perceptions, and until they get a marketing message that raises eyebrows, they are going to continue to struggle against Google's search powerhouse.

Google was worried in 2009 when Bing came out, because Google insiders knew it was a better search product. That is why they raced through a complete search engine rebuild with Caffeine, and they breathed a heavy sigh of relief when they were able to release Caffeine without any substantial loss to market share.

The failure of other Google projects is not indicative of anything beyond the fact that those projects failed. They either picked products that did not have a consumer market, or they built those products badly and could not overtake the competition in those markets.

As with any start-up company, more will fail than succeed. So what? Even though those projects carried the Google backing, they were in fact new start-ups that failed by their own merits or lack thereof.

Google's candle is not fading. They will remain strong for years to come... Right up until the viral nature of the Internet takes hold and people start to realize that Google Search is inferior to Bing...

But that will not happen until we figure out when the next post-2012 apocalypse is anticipated to happen.

@AFI - I have talked with someone that worked on the Bing development team. Bing is upside down from Google.

Google relies on inbound links to measure a site, with on-page content being towards the bottom of determinant factors.

Bing relies most heavily on on-site content, and inbound links are towards the bottom of the scale of importance.

Bing is the polar opposite of Google, in how they determine the value of one website over another in the search rankings.

Then that seems very easy to manipulate. My sites are review sites. It still makes no sense why I don't rank well. I have good, exclusive info and tons of text. Bing just really confuses me.

To be honest with you, I really don't care one way or another if they stay huge or diminish a little bit.

As long as the number of people using the internet keeps growing online commerce will too.

It will just be a matter of keeping up to date with how people find what they're looking for. Whether it's Google or Facebook or Twitter or whatever else, it's all good by me.

You do of course realize every year top engineers leave Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, IBM, HP, Lexmark, Oracle, and every top IT company? They start new companies, or are offered amazing salaries and opportunities in hot start-ups, etc.

The real factor you need to watch is how effective the company is at ATTRACTING TOP NEW ENGINEERS. This is where the real action is.

Sounds like a mixed news. Some people will get hurt if Google eventually falls while others will get some ben efits from Bings eventual rise. I love competition but not 'ganging up' though

At the present moment, Google stepping down because of Bing is unrealistic.

What is most probable in the near future is Google bowing down to facebook
but to Bing?????? That's presently impossible.

I don't know why people compare Google and Facebook?

They are 2 completly different beasts, people don't choose one over the other, they have 2 different uses.

Forbes valued Google at $200 billion, do you think the loss of a top engineer will ultimately effect them?

(discussing facebook)The $50 billion is more than twice as much as the market's valuation of Yahoo. It's also worth more than eBay, but still less than Amazon.com - not to mention Google, which now stands at nearly $200 billion.
Plenty more "top engineers" waiting for thier shot.

    Just my op

I love the money I have made, thanks to Google, but it's
important for the search market to be shared at least
60/40. So, I welcome Bing or Yahoo taking the other
40%. It's a good thing for us IMers to not rely 100% on
    Google for our traffic,

Although google is losing market but bing is never been a competitor for google.
Google search results are much better than bing. I guess this time google's business is facing some problems but in near future it will prove itself again the best search engine. So google is still best.
