(direct) / (none) category on Google Analytics: oddly high for my site?

INTERNET MARKETING

I am getting about 1/3 of my traffic coming from the "(direct) / (none)" category, according to Google Analytics. I have looked a bit into what that means, and I have found that this typically means visits from bookmarks or typing the address directly into the URL. But there's no way my (fairly new) site has this many people visiting in this fashion each day!

Do you have experience with the "(direct) / (none)" category being oddly high? What do you think causes this?

  Sometimes it means you have pages on your site that don't have the analytics code added correctly. If a visitor on one of those pages clicks an internal link to another page, it can show up as direct because google doesn't know the last internal page the visitor was on so it assumes the visitor came straight to this second page directly.

Thanks for the tip, but I don't think that's it; I have my Google Analytics code in my header, which appears on all pages.

  I just took a look at the site in your signature. Another possibility it brought to mind is that people are clicking an external link, and then clicking the back button. I suspect that will log as direct, although I haven't tested it.
  
  You have external links to your "latest clients" which would invite that behavior. Maybe try it yourself, and then see if you get a direct visit that matches your city.

I always thought it meant the visitor arrived by typing the domain name instead of searching.

It means Google doesn't know where the traffic came from because there wasn't a referrer.
There are many reasons why this maybe. Do you know where external links to your site may be located? Secure site would cause this; certain types of redirects could cause this.
