Advice Many People Need

I'm posting a link to a nearly four-year-old blog entry by Raymond Chen here, because it's applicable.

If you have to ask, you're probably doing something wrong - The Old New Thing - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

If you have to ask about various operating system limits, you're probably doing something wrong.
The WSO rules are, in a very real sense, the "operating system" of the WSO forum.

The rules as posted are kind of vague, yes, but asking about the limits is still pretty much the same.

If you have to ask, you are probably doing something wrong.

How much of someone else's WSO can I copy? You are probably doing something wrong.

Precisely how unique do you have to make that PLR ebook before you can sell it as a WSO? You are probably doing something wrong.

Exactly how big does the product need to be so you can include this crappy bunch of PLR products as a "bonus" to the WSO? You are probably doing something wrong.

And when you get an answer back from the help desk that says you can indeed do what you want, stop and think for a moment about whether this is just a case of them giving you more rope to see what you do with it.

Because you are still probably doing something wrong.

I am always doing something wrong. I personally become quite afraid of asking questions online because of the sarcastic and sometimes rude comments that are left. Not that I get that many from this site, but it does happen.

I think the real problem when it comes to the WSO section is that people just do not read the rules. It is not the rules, but the person failure to read them. They ask a question and they in turn receive the rude and sarcastic remarks.

I guess maybe I will post my experience so far in another thread. Then maybe someone can point me in the right direction because I am definitely doing something wrong.

That's exactly what it is. From moderating at DP I noticed with the 20 PM's a day that people just don't read the rules even though they are right there in front of their face.

It's better to ask forgiveness then permission right? Well not all the time.

      Yes... Yes you can.

However, there are consequences to every action. (I know you were kidding)

      So am I.

      SO is *everyone*.

It's what you DO to adapt that matters.

As long as you think through it and aren't just asking people to do your work for you, never be afraid to ask a question.

Keep in mind that the question you just asked has probably been asked a few hundred times before.

The sarcasm and rudeness are often just the regular members trying to deal with the reality that OH DAMMIT ALL TO HELL I AM SO SICK OF THIS QUESTION.

I think the real problem when it comes to the WSO section is that people just do not read the rules.
That's a large part of it, but what's really grinding my gears at the moment is the number of people asking variations on "Can I use this loophole to exploit the WSO forum for quick cash with no real effort?" - and in general, I don't like that question.

The WSO forum is a place for Warriors to help other Warriors with special offers, special deals, and quality products. If you're just looking for a quick and easy way to grab "your share" of the cash, you're doing something wrong.

Which is always a great way out of asking the question. But, I am not referring to questions just about the rules of the board. I am also referring to questions about how to get started and what steps are next.

yep sure buddy, anyone that takes the pizzles with you send them over to the darklock and he, and his buddies will round up a pile of flying monkeys that zap the crap out them.

Champ there are just a bunch of people out there who have nothing better to do than be twats, do not let twats rule your day, over time you will meet some forum buddies that will gel with the work your doing and you can reach out in private PM or skype etc as well, but never let these clowns run your day, they are the lesser people for peddling the crap and you are the greater person for getting past it.

And if need be a clown writes something really bad just hit the report button on the post and send it to the mods, the forum rules are in place to protect people from personal attacks.

          Ask good questions.

"I am new to IM... how do I get started?"

          That's a bad question.

"I want to start a niche blog to sell a Clickbank product, but I don't have hosting or a domain. Can I do this on a free host like Blogger or Wordpress.com instead?"

          That's a good question.

See the difference? There's an actual, clearly-defined question with a clearly-defined answer. More people will answer that one.

Most people don't bother to ask a good question. They throw their arms up and say "tell me what to do!" and we can't answer that question very well.

So we make fun of them, because at the very least we can giggle about it and enjoy ourselves until they ask a better question.

It is awesome when you are not so stuck on yourself that you can laugh at yourself.

I often get the biggest kick when I realize what a dunce I have been.

The other day, I told someone "not to eat with food in their mouth"... That was really funny as soon as I realized what I had said...

Being able to laugh at yourself is the key to getting past the idiots that make you feel like a fool. I have never actually posted a thread like

I am new, tell me what to do next

But, I have asked quite a few stupid questions without searching for an answer first. That was back when I did not want to search the forums for the answer. With all those rude and sarcastic remarks that I received, I learned that it is easier to search first and ask later.

Caliban, I love your posts...which is why I opened up this thread.

Now I'm going to play devil's advocate, in a way.

Some people are just plain stupid, so they have to ask. They have no
choice but to ask because they're so brain dead.

It doesn't mean that they're trying to get around the system (not that
you're suggesting that (at least I don't think)). They are truly just clueless
and will ask, what would seem to us, obvious questions.

Now, here's the irony of all this. In order to ask the kind of questions
you're alluding to, the person would have to have some smarts, and in
most cases, yes, they are trying to pull a fast one.

Are there exceptions? Sure. I asked some pretty stupid questions when I
first started out in 2003 because I literally had NO clue.

But I smartened up REAL fast.

Anyway, love your threads my friend. Always a joy to read and I always
                    get something out of them.

That's precisely what I'm suggesting. There are all these people asking if they can do X and Y in their WSO, and it's obvious to all concerned that what they really want is to run a WSO that makes money without doing any real work or delivering any real value.

If you have to ask where the line is, you are probably doing something wrong.

You make some good points, and your right. I do wish people would spend a little more time reading, and maybe ask a few better defined questions then "How do I start making my millions in a few hours?" but I can understand the impulse.

Internet Marketing is awash with false promise, and to the outsider the actual means of doing it can look like a mix of voodoo, and ritual prayer.

Still I've been there, and I'm sympathetic.

Sarcasm is often employed when people say silly things like, "I did not have the time to read everything that has been said here, but could you answer me this one question?"

    LOL

Yeah, even I get a kick out of these posts. I do agree that not having the time is just a lame excuse for not wanting to look. I actually spend countless hours reading posts made right here at WF and other forums. This is how I learn, at least I believe it is. Most of my time spent here is just lurking.
