Title says it all.

I am especially interested into digging into the long-tails, based from some more generic keywords.

I usually go to SEO Chat for all my keyword research needs.

They have a bunch of advanced online tools to help you out.

I just use the Google Keyword Tool and I'm doing just fine. I guess the answer is your head.... especially when you delve into the niche and read tons of copy!

Adwords external tool using exact match then you can drill down to long tail and to get a brief idea of competition plug them into wordtracker paid version or do it manually by simply checking the sites on page one at google.

For quick data plug them into an adwords campaign using exact match and you can find out the true demand of each keyword.
