When building a list, is it important that your knowledgeable about your Niche

How important is this factor?

I wrote an article a few months back and I'm now ranked for a fairly competitive keyword. Up to now I've used direct linking to the sales page and i've made a fair few sales. I want to build a list in this niche because I know I could make a lot more. Only problem is, it would be for profit only as I'm not particularly interested/knowledgeable on the niche.

    I have a hunch most people are not. Not sure what effect this has on the success of a list which is probably the more important question.
