Legal Concerns with Interview Product

Just did an interview with a big deal dude in my niche, told him I'm writing an ebook about it.

He's cool with it, but doesn't want me "copywriting his stuff" or anything like that.

Where can I find contracts about this sort of thing?

I'd like to have somehting for him to sign that makes him feel good about this product so that I can go out and sell ASAP!!!

It's pretty common to share distribution rights of your product with the expert as a means of oiling the gears.

You can find sample forms that might be a start by searching for:

    talent release form
    speaker release form

  • By the sounds of it you don't need to go that in-depth. If he has just done an interview and you want to duplicate it (without edit) then a simple acknowledgement of this should suffice. By email should cover it, or if you are still concerned get a letter from him in normal mail.

What you have done is quite normal, to start getting too legal may just over do it, I know it would with me, and I would wonder why.

Of course this is not legal advice and should not be construed as such.
If the interview is done and you were upfront it would be used for an informational product then as I understand it you have him sign a release he is saying don't copyright my stuff well basically he is saying you can't own it but if you interviewed him most of the time my understanding is both parties can use it as a product

Essentially its not just the interview, its the breakdown of the interview into what I saw as the major points and concepts. He was cool with the content though, so maybe I just ask him:

    "Hey ______,
I did my research on the copyright issues here and things here. I'm new to this stuff, but in an interview situation it looks like getting a confirmation from you that this product (and no other variations of it) is okay to use is probably the best method (once its 100% complete). Then we can both save this. In addition, I think there are 'speaker release forms' that can also be used in these situations, would you like me to find one?
I obviously just want this to be something you feel comfortable about, because I'm excited to get this information out to people.
Let me know what you think and we can take it from there,
Thanks, talk to you soon, _______.

^^ I think I'll send him that for now.

With regards to being "too serious," I think that I should cover my bases should he ever say "HEY! Don't market my product like that, I don't want you selling this!"

    Sound like a viable path?

    Thanks so much guys,

Alright it looks like the guy is down with it, but he wants something that says it "isn't exclusive" (IE: its not only me that can use it, I guess).

He also wants an agreement on how much I'll give him, too. Would this be a separate form or can I find a way to combine the two?

Do I need to mail it to him and have him sign it?

Thanks again! I'm excited to have my first product on the way.

You can probably combine the two.

Let me rephrase: your attorney can probably combine the two. You're getting into lawyer territory now.
