Affiliate Marketing for Abstract Ideas

6 replies
Hey, everyone.

People say - and wisely so - that if you're going to get into affiliate marketing or niche marketing and the like, you should have a business related to something you're passionate about or at least interested in. My question is, what do you do if the things you're interested in are abstract ideas; things that aren't built around tangible products like fishing rods or pool tables or something? What if your interests are in philosophy or politics or humanitarian work? What if you wanna make your living in a way that helps change the world? What do you market then? The only thing I can think of is books. Anybody got any other ideas for what general kinds of products one could make a living selling that're related to these more abstract fields? Or am I going completely in the wrong direction with this? Maybe affiliate/niche marketing isn't the right approach. what do you think?

Thanks, everyone.

    I understand you want to write about something you're passionate about, but if you can't monetize your niche properly, then don't expect to make a lot of money. This goes hand in hand with "buying keywords" and "im just looking keywords". You have to realize whatever niche you're going for, you must have 2-3 different ways to monetize it and make it profitable. If you your research and still come up empty handed, then move on to a different niche, unless you want to spend your time knowing that you may not make money in the end.

      But what I'm asking is how do I monetize niches like the ones I mentioned?

    The problem with abstract ideas that you are passionate about is that some of those things are very difficult to monetize.

    I am passionate about chess and astronomy, but both are difficult to monetize.

    Sometimes you should consider putting to the side those things you are passionate about, to pursue things that you know you can make money doing.

    There are three typical pursuits of Internet Marketers:

    * Do what you are passionate about;

    * Find a market where people are currently spending money and fill the need;

    * Find a market where people are currently spending money and where you have some passion, then fill the need.

    I tend to pursue the second and third options myself.

    I like finding a market and filling it, because there is never a question as to whether I can make money.

    If you decide that you definitely want to follow the passion, then explore those who are in that niche, and try to dissect their monetization plan. How are they making money?

    I think you will find most are advertising based.

    They will start with Google Adsense and CPA offers aimed at the consumer marketplace.

    When they have built a large following, then they start offering advertising directly to advertisers.

    They will find many of their advertisers in their audience, and eventually they will offer advertising space to advertising media agencies.

    If you go to The Drudge Report, he has mostly advertising from major consumer advertisers. I am betting that he is selling his advertising through an advertising media agency, which in turn finds actual advertisers to plug into his site.

    When you are big enough to attract the attention of agencies, then they will handle everything for you.

      Chess and Astromony are hard to monotize? How so? With Chess, you've got chess-boards. That seems like a gold-mine right there. I'm not a big chess player, but I've seen all kinds of cool shess boards that make me want to play more. Then you've got strategy guides or mentoring. If I was good at chess, I'd charge people a few bucks for lessons. Astronomy? Even setting aside telescopes, there's a ton of accessories and books you could sell.

      I appreciate your suggestions about finding a market where people are spending a lot of money. How do you set yourself apart from the legions of other people also trying fill that need, though?

    Definitely don't waste your time on a favorite niche of yours if you can't make money with it. Many years ago, I stopped trying to promote/write about things that I liked and started going after niches that other people liked - that's when I became successful and it hasn't stopped for over 15 years now.

      I guess I'm not above going after niches I'm not entirely crazy about, but where do I get content for them? How can I write articles about stuff I'm not interested in?
