Making Money Online: 5 Skills Every Online Marketer Should Learn

Regardless whether you choose to sell other people products or your own I feel these 5 skills are essential to your business.

1.Learn how to Build a Squeeze page - A squeeze page is simple a one page website where someone is offering you something for free in exchange for your name and email. I feel building your list is probably the most powerful thing you can do for your business. Once you build your list you can make money on demand and drive traffic to any website by sending a simple email. So I recommend to learn how to build a squeeze page and build your list. Provide a high value FREE product in exchange for your visitors email.

2.Learn how to use an Autoresponder - An autoresponder is the service you will use to build your list. This is where you will create all your "name and email" forms and where all your captured emails will be stored. This is also where you will be sending all your emails from.
With your autoresponder you can also automate your business by setting up unlimited amount of pre-written emails to be delivered at a specific scheduled time and within those scheduled emails you can promote products and make money.

3.Learn how to Build a Blog - Every successful online marketer I know has a blog! A blog is another powerful tool you will have in your arsenal. With a blog you can easily review and promote products. So when a visitor lands on your blog and buys a product you reviewed you get paid. Not to mention the ability to build your brand and share your experiences with the world.

4.Learn how To Drive Traffic - No online business survives without traffic PERIOD! You can have the best world changing product but if you are not able to drive traffic to your site no one will ever buy it! This is key in your business LEARN IT!!

5.Learn how to Build Relationships - This may sound easy but many people have this all wrong. Online marketing is ALL ABOUT relationships. As well as offline marketing. People buy from people they know, like and trust. Some people lose all reason when marketing online and feel that showing people you care about them doesn't matter online. That all you have to do is spam your website link everywhere on the web and you'll be rich! You want to lead with value and the money will follow. Show people you care!

If you learn how to master these 5 skills then you are on the right track to a successful online business!

Be patient and take the time to learn each skill!

Any other skills to add?

What's the deal with so many using an autoresponder service that get regularly blacklisted? I got hold of a great PHP script and own my own AR. 100% delivery rate. C'ant beat that and no more fees.

Sorry to point out the obvious, but that 'appears' to be an affiliate link.

I have never used Aweber but have rather always used GetResponse.

I am curious - Is it because GetResponse is complex to use that you prefer Aweber to GetResponse or are there other reasons?

I have used both, and I feel that they're fairly comparable in terms of features and ease of use. The OP was just expressing his thoughts about it, but of course he's entitled to his opinions, as are you.

I think you are very right. Especially about the 5th point which is one of the points many IM usually neglect or pay very little or no attention to.
At times some of them just take ut as a goal to spam your inbox at every hour of the day and unfortunately for them I have make it as a goal too to send them to my spam folder which I usually delete in bulk without ever looking what is inside. So if you are an IM and you are spamming your list as describe above, chances are 90% of your list does act like me.

    And you know the conclusion.

There is also an autoresponder service called SimplyCast. There is a free version and then you can always upgrade to a paid plan. But what I like the most about it is that it is very user friendly and it goes beyond just email marketing. You can use survey marketing, sms marketing, event marketing, etc.

I fully agree with building a list. That is so so important.

And like you I tried both getresponse and aweber. I did not like getresponse. I just ended my billing with them and I'm exploring aweber now!

You could perhaps build a squeeze page with a free offer (ebook, video,VIP access, lessons, mini course) then create a new thread as an admin offering your free stuff.

As a forum owner don't you have an email list already when they signed up for your forum?

You could send them to that squeeze page with the free stuff.

Once you get the list, start building relationship. You simply use this list as instant traffic for you. You can send an email telling them to go to your blog, you can sell them related niche offer, send them affiliate promotions. Possibilities are endless.

Copywriting is the most valuable skill you can possess. Without it, you won't be able to sell.

Joshua gave really good point there, it seems he is focusing on email marketing for primary bussiness model.

Other thing is, what Dean Dune say is really important. Honestly, if you at least got some skill at copywriting then you can build your bussiness faster. Copywriting should be one of your important skill to learn, basicly you gotta sell something rite?

The relationship part is important. If you want to build a good list, you have to get trust from your visitors. You need to have an about me page where you talk about yourself. There are zillions of blogs who are just on topic (mostly autoblog) and we dont know who the blogger is, how can we have trust?

    I agree Joshua.
All valid skills everyone should know.
But most people who begin an Online Business think they must 'master' those skills before they 'jump in'.
    I was one of those.
My opinion is...learn what you need to have a successful online business.
( all of the skills you mentioned )
but don't consume your time with just learning.
There is help out there...& I mean OUTSOURCING.

This was my mistake in the beginning.
I believed that I had to learn everything & implement everything myself in my business.

Work ON your business...NOT in it !!

    Cheers...Ted

One of the most important skills you can learn for your business is how to write. Don't think: I can just outsource my writing - YOU are your brand. Only YOU can communicate that to potential clients. The best way of communicating that is to learn to write.

And yes, even if your writing 'sucks' you can learn how to write.

This is especially true if you're wanting to brand your business - this requires consistency in your writing, and your character and personality also have to show in everything you write, and that is something that is pretty much impossible to outsource!

Most of us here are 'one man bands.' We ARE our brand - every communication we make either reinforces or detracts from our brand. If you post cheap articles written by an outsourcer there is no way your brand will be represented.

If the article is poorly written that will detract from our brand. In my opinion the number 1 thing you can do for your business this year is learn how to write and/or how to communicate with your audience.

I couldn't agree more, Paul. When operating as a 'one man band', it's crucial that we convey a coherent and consistent message in all our communication, and it'd be impossible to achieve this if some part or most of our communication/message is outsourced.

On the other hand, I'd see how outsourcing would be valuable if we were building some part of our business that wasn't centered around our brand, such as Amazon and Adsense sites, which don't really require branding to be successful.

With that said, outsourcing when used judiciously can be a very powerful resource, and we just need to know the appropriate circumstances in which to use it.

            Absolutely agree,

I wasn't dismissing outsourcing - just dismissing its use for a primary business activity like content creation.

I use outsourcing for content syndication - so I've already created the content and it reflects what I want it to reflect, and someone else posts it following my instructions. Leaving me time to create more!

Those are important skill sets to have, but you also need to have resilience....as IM is not easy, and not every "plan of attack" will pan out. One has to be able to stand up again and dust himself off...and do it again (but better).

  • The backbone of anything you do online is communication.

The backbone of each of these steps is communication.

In my estimation, it's always a wise idea to focus a massive portion of time mastering this area because everything that happens to your business online is the result of your communication. Everything. Good or bad.

These tools only serve to deliver communication. Like the pizza delivery boy. But the tool that makes the tool convert or not, which is the name of the game here, is whether or not someone is moved to act on their own behalf, and to your mutual benefit.

And that only happens when what you say to a prospect helps them realize that you've got solutions to their problems or shortcuts to their desires. Which ultimately means that you've gotta sell.

So, what's the highest leverage thing you can do now?

First, let's cover the single biggest mistake people make when getting into the information business...

Most "experts" try to sell THEMSELVES and their EXPERTISE

They believe that people want to buy them and what they know but they don't. People want to buy a SOLUTION or OUTCOME to their problem or desire!!! They don't want to know about you or your credentials and your expertise are not that relevant.

They want results. They wanna fix the thing that's wrong or they wanna get the thing they're going after. They're really not concerned about you!

    Discovering Your Knowledge Goldmine

Most people who go into the information product, advice or coaching business make the mistake of trying to "sell themselves." This almost always ends in feeling self-conscious, fearful of rejection and paralyzed with fear.

    1. Instead of taking that road that leads to failure, let's start instead by taking an inventory of the things you can help people with. What consistent problems and challenges are lots of people having that you know how to solve? Begin by listing problems and challenges that you can help others solve....

    2. Next focus specifically and make a list of how you've helped others in one of the "Big 3 Mega Niches of health, relationships or money...

    3. Finally, write down your best technique for helping someone in trouble in this area to fix their problems fast...

When you put the spot light on the customer and the problems that they're probably having, that's when we start to have big insights that can lead to multi-million dollar businesses.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when starting an information business is teaching something that not many people are looking for, and number two, it's not a big problem people are looking to solve.

Answering these questions is the start of a great info product and business.

Communication is the name of the game! Everything else plays second fiddle to her! Hahaha
