My List Building Experiment - $40 Spent - 350 New Subscribers (Screenshot Inside)

Hi Warriors

When I was writing my product Accelerated List Building I thought it would be useful to run a little experiment to prove that the methods actually work.

I hired a guy from this forum to write 8 articles for me on getting a flat stomach. I paid no attention to keywords just suggested subjects that I believed would have mass appeal for the people of that market.

I paid $40 for the articles and submitted them all in one batch to EzineArticles.com

This was in April 2009.

I was just browsing through my EZA account when I found this little experiment so I thought I'd share the results with you.

Those eight articles have resulted in a total of 621 clicks to my squeeze page. and given my 45%ish conversion rate and allowing for non-confirmers, I estimate that those eight articles costing just $40 and taking 10 minutes to submit, have generated me around 350 new subscribers.

I've attached a screenshot so you can see a breakdown of the article views and clicks. (Ignore the total article views as that includes articles that weren't included in this experiment.)

http://www.acceleratednicheprofits.c...experiment.jpg

From this experiment I can see that one article produces an average of just under 50 subscribers and each article cost $5 which means that with article marketing on EzineArticles.com I'm paying $0.10 for a subscriber.

Plus, if you consider that those articles will continue to generate traffic for as long as EZA is running, the cost per subscriber is continually going to fall.

And, if you also consider the effect a link back from EZA has on SE rankings you can lower the cost per subscriber even further.

And then if you consider on top of that that you can submit those same articles to other article directories you will be getting even more traffic which again further lowers your cost per subscriber.

-----------------------------

Anyone could go away right now, set up a squeeze page (if you don't have one), set up a money making auto-responder sequence, and then write (or hire some else to write) a bunch of articles, submit them to EZA and then see how many subscribers you get as a result of that.

If it's profitable, do it again and do it on a bigger scale.

If it's not, then tweak each aspect (EZA click-thru rate, conversion rate, confirmation rate, turning subscribers into buyer conversion etc etc.) and try it again.

-----------------------------

Making money is a game of numbers and the better your numbers, the more money you'll make.

Hope this has helped or inspired some people and if you're looking for a little more inspiration, check out my screenshot and look at my top four performing articles ever.

They have over 100,000 views between them!

Thanks,
James

Definitely agreed Btw im assuming you are not planning to get ranked for your squeeze page? Seems squeeze pages no longer are able to get ranked?

          Yer, I'm struggling to rank.

I used to rank amazingly for keywords like "abs workouts" "how to lose stomach fat" and many more like that but I've dropped off a lot now.

To combat it I have added an articles section to the site but think I need to make them more prominent on my squeeze page.

These are great results over that period of time for so few articles James.

Did you do anything to promote the articles themselves or did you just let them take their natural course? Also would you spin them for other directories or just leave them as is?

Nope, just let them run their course. I forgot about them to be honest!

I've never spun an article but I suppose you could do. I probably won't submit them anywhere else as I've yet to find anywhere that delivers even 5% of what EZA does.

You say you hired a write from this forum, happen to remember the user??

Some people struggle with their EZA CTR so it may be nice to get his/her name out.

Here's a tip - Take those same articles and submit them to AC. Don't change a thing to them and watch even MORE traffic trickle in. It's my one-two combo that I've used to explode and leverage more traffic with no real extra effort.

However it is such a drawn-out time period! Not sure if I could handle waiting that long to get 350 subscribers.

A greater proportion of the subscribers came in the first few months.

350 subscribers in nearly two years is an average of 1 subscriber per two days. That's from eight articles.

If you had 80 articles submitted then that would be 5 subscribers per day.

I'm not recommending article marketing as your only list building strategy but it's hugely powerful combined with faster lead generation strategies.

So exponentially increase the articles submitted and divide the time by the ratio!

        8 articles over 20 months = 350 subs

Avg per article 17.5 subs per article or .875 subscribers per article per month.

Take all monies earned and reinvest in more outsourced articles until you reach 400 articles, assume we did that in 3 months.

        400 * .875 = 350 subscribers per month in only 3 months.

If all goes well of course.

Ezine Articles is a very effective tool for any internet marketer.

I’ve used it for article marketing for some time now and it is clearly the best of its class.

While it may not flood your site with traffic, it is easy to see why it’s a good thing to invest in for the long run.

@Werna Klue -- if you are looking for good writers the folks over at 99centarticles.com are excellent!

They write 100% unique and high quality articles and are the best that I have come across since being online. And I tell ya, I have been through many, many article writers.

They even actually run a warrior special continuously. Sorry, I can't remember the link to the warrior special pricing. However, if you do a quick search here in the forum on 99centarticles, I am sure they will come up.

      Hope this helps.

It was probably more like 275 subscribers but still a more than worthwhile investment.

Nice! Another case study! I love these!

People do read articles about certain topic they are passionate to find out about. Article marketing sends you good targeted traffic from my experience. And if done write, you can make consistent income as an affiliate marketer through article marketing. I would prefer to build a list but affiliate marketing works well too when you use article marketing!

    Well done!

    Very cool James.

A lot of people think 'quick hit', and although there are plenty of ways to do that, everyone should make sure to include long term strategies (like this) in their tool belt.

Imagine if you had purchased and posted 8 new articles every month.

If 8 articles made 300 subscribers in 20 months, your average batch of articles (since some would be 19 months old, some 1 month old) would be 10 months old, and would have brought 150 subscribers (half of the number achieved in 20 months).

    (20 x 150 subscribers) + 300 = 3,300 subscribers

Send an offer out to a list that size, and if only .05% of them convert to a sale, thats 16 sales x say $20 = $300.

    A couple of observations...

There's some dangerous math in this thread.

James has stated that 8 articles generated 275 subscribers
    over 20 months.

He also said "A greater proportion of the subscribers came in
    the first few months."

So, the number of subscribers per day has decreased over
time. Therefore, it's dangerous to extrapolate an average
    number of subscribers per day.

There is no doubt that article marketing is a great way to
drive targeted traffic to a squeeze page. However, to be
truly effective it shouldn't be a one-off activity... it's an
ongoing process. It has to be to take advantage of the
greater proportion of the subscribers that will come in the
    first few months.

    Hi James,
I agree with your post. The article traffic is one of the most targeted traffic on the internet.I think only PPC and JV traffic can match the quality of this traffic.

I too have done a lot of experimentation on article marketing and according to my experience, the cost for aquiring a subscriber is cheaper with article marketing(If you hire someone to write for you) than with PPC or media buys.

Now the money you make from these subscribers is dependent upon your niche, the effectiveness of your follow up sequence and the offers you promote.

I have also found that giving away a lot of free content in the beginning yields better ROI over the long run.

According to my personal experience,I make anywhere between $10-$20 per subscriber(lifetime value) in IM niche acquired through article marketing.Which I don't think is a bad return on investment considering the fact I have to spend only $5-$6 per article written by a freelancer.

    So overall,article marketing ROCKS!!!
