I've finally taken ACTION! Follow me, newbies...

Newbie here. Actually, I'm not what you call a "complete" newbie to IM since I've been dabbling in online moneymaking activities for the past few years. I've made a few hundred bucks but they're nothing to write home about. My former interest was blogging and despite my lack of knowledge and planning I was able to make some money posting affiliate reviews on my personal blog.

Since then I've fallen into hard times which started when I "foolishly" decided to quit my low-paying job. I was so cash-strapped that I wasn't able to renew the domain name of my personal blog, and my small source of income went down the drain. Later on, my web hosting account got suspended and whatever websites and projects I had were put on hold.

Being a college undergraduate, my opportunities to find financially rewarding jobs are limited. Besides, I hate the idea of working for someone else and making that person rich from the fruits of my labor. So I threw caution to the wind and settled down to a stay at home profession.

Realizing that I lack the knowledge and skills to make my mark in IM, I looked for courses and tutorials that can help me achieve mastery of the various aspects of IM. With the meager income I got from freelance writing and web design jobs, I purchased a few e-books and video courses. Although I learned new tricks from my investments, I still thought that I lacked enough knowledge to start an IM business.

So thus began my crazy search for that "magic" system that I hope will make me a master and guru of IM. Months and months went by without taking any action on my part. My notebook (the paper one ) is filled with admonitions such as "Start My Online Business On August 1, 2010." Obviously, the date passed by without any action. I spent countless hours looking for free and paid e-books, courses, videos, tutorials, etc. I felt that I wasn't ready to jump into the shark-infested IM waters, so to speak.

Whenever I got a new payment on my Paypal account, I immediately thought about what new system or tool I was going to buy. I couldn't care less that my shoes need to be replaced and my T-shirts are fading. I had to buy that magic secret formula for online riches!

An epiphany came in the form of an unexpected event. My estranged father, who left us more than 20 years ago, suddenly contacted us and needed our help. It turned out that he had glaucoma and is now blind. To make a long story short, we had no choice but to accept him back into our lives despite the emotional baggage that our parents' separation brought us. I would be a hypocrite to say that I have totally forgiven him. I know that forgiveness takes time and slowly but surely I have found it in my heart to forgive him bit by bit.

My father's sudden return to our lives means that my family's finances are put to the limits. I realized that all these needless time-wasting looking for magic systems won't help me support my family. I needed to take action!

My dream is to have my own steady source of income so that I will no longer be dependent on my siblings. I also want to build or buy my own house so that I can live independently on my own. My father's unexpected return meant that we can no longer afford to pay for our apartment's rent. Next month we will be moving to a much cheaper apartment while we await my sister's housing loan to be approved.

I'm not sharing my story just to gain sympathy or whatever. I'm sharing this because I want to let newbies who are reading this to stop being too hung up with systems and get "paralysis by analysis" in the process. I've been a victim of information overload (God knows how many MB of videos and e-books I have on my PC right now), and I know how hard it is to start taking action when you have this disease.

I'm not saying that you should stop buying courses and systems. We need to know the latest techniques and methods in IM. What I'm saying is that you should take action while at the same time learning new things. Knowledge without action is nothing. Who cares if you have not yet mastered how to build a mailing list or how to build backlinks? You don't need to master one thing before you can start working on it.

Did I master HTML before I started making websites? Hell, no! I started with Frontpage and then slowly learned the basics from there. It took me a lot of time before I was knowledgeable enough to make websites through hand coding only. I believe the same can be applied to Internet marketing. You don't need to be a genius at linkbuilding, web design, e-mail marketing, etc. to start your online IM business. Just do it, and you will learn new things along the way!

My advice for fumbling newbies out there:
  • Stop reading or watching whatever e-book or video you have right now, and TAKE ACTION! Just do it (as the Nike slogan goes)! Whether it be installing Wordpress, writing a few articles, building a Squidoo lens, or building backlinks. Trust me, once you get started, there's no turning back!
  • Continue your education but do it outside your work hours. If you're like me, I spend 8 hours per day working on my sites but at night, I bring out my printed e-books to read and learn a few things. I don't include my education in my to-do list since I treat it as a leisurely activity.
  • Keep your expenses to a minimum. Avoid expensive tools with monthly payments as they can get costly, until you are earning a consistent income. Be a spendthrift -- at least early on. With a little research and patience, you can uncover cheap tools that perform as well as more expensive ones. Look for coupons and discount promos as much as you can. Hey, I got a 90% discount with my web hosting, and I worked hard for it.
  • Always remind yourself of your goals and dreams. If you have a hard time reminding yourself of your goals, write it down and place it in front of your workplace. My current situation is always a reminder for me.
  • Minimize distractions. Distractions and temptations are always around us especially if you're working at home. Friends may call and invite you to lunch. Your Farmville farm may be needing some watering every now and then. Go ahead, give in, but place limitations. We need some fun once in a while but make sure these distractions don't eat up a lot of your time. If you find yourself getting distracted, think about this: "This is useful because..."
  • Don't quit. Many times I thought about getting a real job because I don't have money to date my girlfriend. But I always remind myself of my dreams. Just stick to it and you will soon achieve your wildest dreams. I mean, after suffering one failure after another, what are your chances of achieving success on the next try? This is not a lottery with a one-in-a-gazillion chance. You actually have your destiny in your hands, and your chances of achieving success gets higher after each failure!
In concluding, I would like to thank my fellow Warriors for their help and inspiration. Special mention goes to Xray who gave me two domain names as a gift so that I can get started. Without his free gifts, I would probably still be reading e-books and watching videos without doing anything worthwhile.

Please feel free to post your comments or PM me.

Regards,
Loy

Your situation reminds me of a story that the late and great copywriter Gary Halbert once told.

He said, if someone pointed a gun to your head and told you that you had 24 to make a hundred dollars or you would die, could you do it?

You see, the problem isn't that we don't have enough information. Most people who if put in that situation would most likely figure out a way to make the $100.

Making money on the internet isn't that difficult. It is our own minds that complicate it and make it so hard. Our problem is that we don't claim the knowledge that we already possess!

Right now you are so close to success . . . you just don't know how close you are.

You already showed in your story that you have the motivation. You are 99 percent there already! Claim your knowledge today and put your own unique twist on what you have learned and make it happen.

      Best wishes,
      Jason

That classic Gary Halbert scenario has a lot of merit to it. Another variation on that is there's a gun pointed to your head, and you have to make X amount of dollars in 24 hours, otherwise your entire family will be murdered.

Scenarios like this give clarity to what you need to do, and this is precisely what is required to combat the information overload which is so prevalent in IM. It strips away all the extraneous stuff and makes us concentrate on only one thing at a time. This exercise is especially good for newbies, and they should practice this often.

You have some great points there - ultimately, we need to find our individual "why" that makes us take relentless action, as this is what will ensure that we succeed in IM. This "why" is unique and different for everyone, and what works for one person may not work for another.

It looks like you've found your "why", and I can clearly see that you're determined to succeed at all costs - this is the exact type of mindset required to reach a breakthrough in IM.

Thanks, Paul! It seems weird that it took a drastic and unexpected event to make me find my "why." I knew I had that dream to get rich through the Internet, but I just wasn't able to find the "why" that can jolt me into action. My father's sudden return is one of the main reasons why I've finally taken action.

Thanks, Sheryl. I hope that next year I will be able to come back and share my success story. And hopefully I can give something back to the community.

That's a nice motivation for anyone -- that idea of someone threatening to kill a person unless he makes $100 that day. If that happens to me, I will definitely do everything in my power to come up with that money. It's surprising that many people already have the knowledge and ability to make large sums of money, but for some reason or another, don't harness that ability. Maybe it will take a life-threatening scenario before they act and do something. Thanks, Jason.

I'm not actually discounting the possibility of buying WSOs and courses in the future. After all, there are some WSOs that greatly enhanced my knowledge and skills in IM. I just stopped getting hung up with systems and courses, and actually take action. Thanks for your comment.

It's not weird at all - it usually requires a sudden and drastic turn of events to shake us out of our complacency, and give us clarity on what we actually need to do. It's very easy to stay in our comfort zones and just continue doing what's easy and familiar to us (and for many people that does not include taking action), so we usually need something to challenge and threaten us to take action.

Great post! you seem to have everything needed to succeed. There are only certain things you need to study more deeply thus enhance your talents on, but for the rest, you're right on!

Daily, I see many trying to learn on subjects that will not bring them closer to their goals. Most times I need to tell my students to stop everything they were doing because they just had it all wrong!

But you seem to have most everything right except perhaps enough "Will" to see through the finish line. You need to have "Will" to spare in IM! Trust me, I know and everyone living their dreams on this forum will tell you this!

I was just like you when I started, and it took me some time to realize that my "will" was wrongly placed. If your "Will" is just to Make Money, sorry to perhaps break your bubble, but success will be much harder to achieve.

I experienced this first hand. I started with the "Will" and intention to Make Money. Money was my only focus! That was my Only goal and after many years I realized that I had Failed!

Simply don't make Money your focal point! Think of helping others for the better of mankind. Think others before yourself and you will succeed Big time!

    Take care...

Thank you for your inputs. With all due respect, sir, you can't blame me for having "money" as my primary goal. I've been poor most of my life (the only time I had a comfortable life was before my parents separated), and I've always wanted to get rich so that I can give my loved ones the comfortable life they deserve. I'm not doing this for myself alone.

I also want to help other people. But without money, I think my options are limited. I was thinking about setting up a scholarship program should I achieve my dreams.

I have to be honest and say that money is my primary goal. Even if my mom always tells me that "Money is the root of all evil." I always counter: "The wrong use of money is the root cause of all evil." Besides, I don't think Bill Gates and others got rich because they wanted to help mankind. But I appreciate your suggestions, and believe me, I also want to help other people.

A lot of young internet marketers get stuck in the developmental stage: the stage where they are trying to learn as much as possible. While it’s great to get a good grasp on what you’re getting yourself into, it turns negative when you get stuck there. There are hundreds of internet marketers who have been trying to make it for years and all they have to show for it is one blog with a few posts on it. Meanwhile they have read every eBook on the planet.

At some point there has to come a time when you take that first step. At some point there has to come a time when you stop relying on the experts and take your future into your own hands. If not, then you will never really succeed as an internet marketer. It would be like a student who just completed 4 years of high school and 4 years of college, but instead of applying for a job goes back to school.

Learning is great, put it is not profitable.

You have a great point there. I know it's safe and comforting to want to learn as much as you can about a topic, but unfortunately with internet marketing it'll do you absolutely no good.

Without action, there can be no results, and you'll be stuck in a constant vicious cycle of learning things over and over again from different courses and systems, and one sure sign that this is happening is when you go through some new course material, and find it to be pretty much derivative and rehashed.

That is a warning sign, folks. That means you're learning too much and not applying any of the stuff you've learned.

You have to take that leap of faith and go out there and take action. It may be uncomfortable, and you'll inevitably run into failures, but this is how you'll learn and grow.

Consider this to be "on the job" training. Many real world jobs make you start first as an intern or trainee, and internet marketing is no different. How are you going to learn the ropes if you aren't actually out there doing this stuff? Think about this for a moment and reflect on it. Without action, absolutely nothing happens, whether it is online or offline.

    Loy,

Thank you for sharing your story and taking back your father who needs help. Not many will do that after he left like that.

I agree in IM, I am in to IM for short time, I started a cooking recipe blog, not good at money making, I am learning and reading so much, there is hardly time for "doing" things. Luckily, I have stayed away from buying that magic pill offering product as I do not make much yet. I wish you well and all of us. Get working.

Thats great to hear that you began to take action.

Thought leads to feeling, feeling leads to action, action leads to results!

Results give you feedback and makes your think more to be creative and strategic in your business, which gives you a great sense of motivation(feeling) which makes you want to do more for your business (action).

Just get yourself into this habit and you'll do just fine online.

    NEVER GIVE UP.

    Being original/creative helps.

I'm glad you are able to see beyond.

Buying WSO's will lead you to debt and bring you no where. There is plenty free information that can help you become successful. Make friends on here -- Some people on Warriorforum are extremely helpful.
