Is it just a matter of writing a review of the product? Seem to have trouble with this.. I think I have a handle on kw reasearch.. but I am having trouble preselling products..

    Review is just one form of presell. Generally, reviews work better if it's a product keyword.

    Imagine someone finds you through a keyword like mind power and you hammer him with a mind power product review, your conversion won't be that fascinating.

    Think from the perspective of your visitor. If he types in mind power into Google and lands on your site, he's looking for information on mind power.

    So why not give him some good content, "3 Steps To Activate Mind Power For Health, Wealth and Happiness" then along the article, sprinkle your affiliate links to different mind power products.

    Alternatively, content then get him to optin and you presell him with more content and affiliate products!

      Hard to add much to Joel's excellent reply above.

      Doing a "review" isn't compulsory, but it's certainly one way of pre-selling. Especially if it's a straightforward, honest review mentioning a disadvantage or two as well as all the advantages.

      I often find that "Who should buy it?" and "Who shouldn't buy it"? are useful additional sub-headings (whether in your own mind or on the page).

      For me, the single most important concept is that pre-selling isn't "selling". The vendor's sales page/site does the "selling".

      From what I've seen here, when affiliates post links to their sites to invite comments, the two commonest mistakes people make are (i) trying to sell and/or making the thing look like a sales page, and (ii) not building a list.

      The idea is to establish yourself as having credibility on the topic. You don't want to sound like a pitch-man.

      The idea is this:

      1) I know about the problem you're having (because I used to have the same problem).

      2) Here are some amazing things I've learned about the problem.

      3) If you'd like to know more, I learned a lot from Product X, or I looked for answers all over the Internet and Product X is the best thing out there.

      You want to be a real guy who's found a solution that works and wants to share it.

    Pre-selling isn't really all that hard, because you're not actually trying to sell at all. You basically want to inform and let them know how this product may benefit them, without sounding to salesy.

    And combine a pre-sell with a review page. Compare the product you're trying to sell to another similar product in your niche and let them know why you recommend your product over the other.

    If you really want to get good, I suggest studying sales and copywriting. Learn all the sneaky little psychology you can work writing and figure out how to do it without blatantly selling.

    I could do this all day long, so I'll stop for now.

    While the general idea of preselling may be simple, it can also be quite complex. When done properly a solid piece of presell content can turn a 1-2% sales page into a 5-6% sales page.

    Here is a free and excellent ebook about preselling written by Ken Evoy
    a long time ago. The book was updated last year.

    It is worth reading, and you will know probably all you will ever need to
    know about preselling.

    Preselling is very simple. You have be (or atleast sound like a) friend of your visitor and recommend him a product. While recommending a product you must address following questions.

    1)What the product is all about?
    2)What are couple of main advantages?
    3)What is a single main disadvantage?
    4)Last one, how that product is going to solve a burning problem of a reader?

    If you address following questions without boring reader then you will have pretty nice conversion ratio.

    Also don't forget to add good call to action links. You will not get commission credited to your account unless and until visitor clicks on your affiliate link.

    Good advice above. In review form, imagine standing outside a sales stand and someone coming up beside you asking: "have you tried this, mate? is it any good?"

    You wouldn't reply: "Yes, this breaktrough system will in fact make all your dreams come true within 7-9 days or you'll get your money back. That's an iron clad guarantee! And it isn't your fault that you haven't succeeded yet, it is those gurus....those goddamn gurus! But you must act fact because they only have 2 copies left - so grab yours within next 13 seconds or lose out forever!!!"

    You would probably give your honest opinion. For better or worse. And if you appear as someone who knew what he was talking about you can put a pretty large bet on the fact that your opinion would make a strong impact on the decision the guy that asked makes.

    In short words...

    You are social proof wrapped up inside a website. So once again, make sure you show that you appear as someone worth listening to. Give away some valuable info for free to add some reciprocity to the equation. Learn how to sell in-directly (paint mental pictures, add small psychological triggers, expectation manage external sales claims etc)

    Otherwise, for general affiliate marketing:

    I would like to add that you should take notice to the keywords you get traffic from in terms of which tone you should choose on your site / different landing pages.

    When someone types in "fly fishing" in the search engines that's an expression of wanting to know more about that particular term. In that case, it would not be ideal to go straight to pre-selling but rather provided valuable information about that subject and rather sell the concept of fly fishing itself before you sell a product.

    When someone types in "fly fishing techniques" thats an expression on being sold on the term/concept and wanting to do something about it. Which makes it more plausible / right to presell a product. Or even better, offer some basic techniques and guide to some product that takes you beyond.
