LOL good question. Confucius says if one has to ask himself if he/she is a "Guru" chances are that he or she has not yet reached such a enviable status lol.

I'm with this! I think that now a days, the person who becomes an expert, positions himself (or herself!) as an expert.

I read this study on the psychological and biochemical effects of body language.. posing like you're confident and actually moving your body that way.

The study showed that just posing this way actually induces an increase in testosterone in the body at that moment.

Increase your internet testosterone, study like a madman, learn as much as you can and position yourself as a guru!

What actually makes a guru a guru? At what stage do they become a guru? Is it when they are good at what they do and can teach others or is it when they reach a particular income?

I'm sure there are probably many people that reach those criteria but aren't considered one of the big guru's. Maybe it's just when you go around promoting yourself as a guru!

I knew I was a guru as soon as I was born. Yep, born to guru bieatch!
Norb is a guru! Although he might not go around promoting himself as a 'big guru' (other than in this thread) I think he is one!

I think there are a couple of signs that can show a person whether or not he is a guru.

If you have knowledge gained through life experience, trial and error, formal education, or some other means that that average person does not then that is the first sign.

If you can be successful at something and help others replicate that success, then that is also a good sign.

If you are able to answer the majority of questions that people have on a certain topic thoroughly.

If you have all of the above qualities, then I think it would be safe to say that you are a guru.

since I have direct contact with a person that some
would call a guru. I think the term is best applied to
someone that is able to translate what they have learned
and what they do into a method/course and then (actually)
help others along that same path.

just selling 'stuff' and making a lot of money, does not
in my mind qualify! guru = teacher

just a funny perspective...he told me that while he has
made over a million on the net? that the 'guys' give him
a ribbing as he has yet to make a million in a year, and
that while he hopes to hit that this year, they will then
say "yeah, well make that in a month!"

my take away was that it all depends on where you are
standing and looking at the time.

They don't know until a veteran guru tests them and tells them that they have passed the "guru-graduate test". How do I know?

If a student sets a test for himself, chances are that he will pass himself but if a teacher or a higher student sets the test for the same student, chances are that he might fail woefully.

The Official Guru Certificate of Authenticity is available through the Guru Institute and is delivered via certified mail to notify someone when they have reached Guru status.

If a person cannot present to you their Official Guru Certificate of Authenticity, they are not a true guru.

I've heard that it's like Skull & Crossbones. You'll get tapped when it's time, and you'd better be prepared to drop whatever you're doing and go.

They have a secret handshake - watch closely at the next seminar you attend.

And sometimes when they get together, they wear these snazzy white apron things made from lambskin... with some sort of magick symbols embroidered on it.

And I've also heard of the orgies at the mansion, where they show up in masks and speak a password to get inside.

Tom Cruise sneaked in once. That didn't work out so well.

I am not sure. I bet some real gurus out there are quietly making money somewhere and not many will truly know about them.

Some experts truly wants to help others and achieve what they have and they share and help while helping themselves.

If that is the case, then they are not gurus in the pure sense. Only highly successful experts.

Guru status is when you have a crowd of loyal people who despite having failed miserably with all your other products, keep spending thousands on all of your new products... and ask to have a photo taken with said guru at seminar events using their cell phone.

That's when you know that you have arrived, because only master marketers can achieve such miracles.

Social proof can be a very powerful thing, and we see this herd mentality exhibited all over the place, and not just the internet. A guru typically plays into the psychology behind this herd tendency to create a horde of raving fans.

I HATE the use of that misused word.

The people who make enough money online to stay home and not work for "the man"
have experience, and they know how traffic is created. That is the only difference between a so-called newbie and a full-timer.

One person's answer to make a full time living may be an activity that others would hate. I have friend who said he would hate my job. As he said it,

"I could never just stay at home and type on a computer all day"

I get that. It's just a choice in lifestyle choice.

One thing FOR SURE - you can make a full time living online and my wife and I have been working at home full time since 2005 now. It's not some fantasy. It's very real when you finally realize how search engines work.

A Guru is the term someone calls themselves when they think that they're masters of the universe within this industry, over inflated egos most of the time. I'd run a mile away from anyone who says they're a Guru in anything.

If you really are an expert at something, say you're an expert if you have ground to stand on when making a bold statement like that. But don't start calling yourself a Guru, people are going to start laughing at you for one.

A big bank account alone does not necessarily indicate guru status, but having many people constantly ask for advice in your chosen field is usually a fairly reliable indicator.
