Warriors, Do You Know What Your Virtual Army Knows?

One of my uncles closed down his business a few days back because he relied on his workers for everything. The only thing he knows about the business is how to buy. He doesn't even know how to sell.

What is the point of this post?

I discovered that some folks here just want the shortcuts without considering the negative effect it (the shortcut) could have on their business. They have virtual assistants. They have ghostwriters. They have link builders. They have all the marketing software you can think of.

Nothing is wrong with having people that would help you to get things done but my point is, "don't you think you should have a comfortable idea of what your virtual workers do so that you will know when they are doing the wrong thing"?

Don't you think that your virtual assistants might take your business for granted if they know that you have no slightest idea of what virtual assistance is all about?

Don't you think that your ghostwriters might take you for a ride if they find out that you don't know anything about grammar and spelling?

I can go on and on.

The bottom line is that you should know at least a little about what you outsource so that nobody will take you for granted.

I'm not good at explaining things, please forgive me if you don't understand what I'm talking about.

P.S. Knowing the fundamentals, basics, essentials of what your virtual army does for you will save you some grief.

Cheers.

You bring up a good point.

Over the past few months I have been helping someone with their sites, getting them online, editing the payment buttons, etc... the kind of things that come natural for me now. But also, the kind of things that I think every website owner should know.

I have repeatedly asked this person to try to remember what I did and search Google for answers to simple tasks when they are stuck, but they always seem to never get around to it.

Like you said, you can just pay someone to do it for you... but what about the times when your helper is away and you need something done quick? Maybe someone is doing an adswap for you and your page is broken... then what? The beginner tasks should be learned by everyone.

Have you taken massive action today?

      Exactly my point!

Joel, I'm happy that at least one person is seeing what I'm seeing and thinking the way I'm thinking.

I have always told my warrior friends here that I have been thinking out-of-the-box lately.

Wait for them; they will soon be all over me for starting this thread.

This is why I learned to use FrontPage, FTP, how to install WordPress from scratch, how to tweak PHP and HTML (a bit), etc. If I couldn't do it, what would happen to me/my sites if the person who did it for me decided to bow out? I'd be left with a mess on my hands I had no idea how to clean up.

Excellent Point! I'm a firm believer in doing it first yourself before trying to make it scalable and/or outsource.

You made a good point by mentioning that your workers might take advantage if they knew you weren't as knowledgable.

This made me think of those jobs we had in high school where we didn't really care and goofed off when certain managers were there because you knew you could get away with it.

When the cat's away (or lazy) the mice will play!

      !
The mice might not play but it might just decide to be as lazy as (or lazier than) the cat.
