Email Marketing Questions -- How Well Do You Know Your List?

by tpw

How well do you know your mailing list audience?

What are your open rates?

How much feedback do you get from your readers?

What is your attrition rate? (How many unsubs per month as measured against new subscribers?)

How much do you earn from your mailing list, in terms of average dollars per subscriber?

Do your readers appreciate what you send them?

How often do they click your links?

Each of these questions are important, and all of them teach us something about the people on our lists...

In part, this is an exercise to help you better understand your mailing list.

And in part, inquiring minds want to know...

I think the most important question to ask about your
list (as a list owner) is...

What do your list really want?

Then you give it to them better than anyone else in
    your niche.

Do that and sales, open rates, click-through-rates,
unsubscribes and lifetime subscriber values take care
    of themselves.

These figures are EFFECTS. It's better to understand
the CAUSE of the EFFECT so you can create better
    results.

And the CAUSE is meeting your subscriber needs better
than anyone else in your market.

Which ass did you pull that figure from?

I don't believe your 90% figure for one second - especially
      if it's for unique opens.

In my experience open rates are inherrently inaccurate
but I've never seen open rates consistently above 90%.

For a start, many subscribers do not allow the open rates
to be tracked at their end - so it's near impossible to get
90%+ open rates stats at your end (for unique opens).

I've been list building since 2003 and can spot dodgy
          figures in a heartbeat.

Your figures don't stack up with reality.

          I could be wrong.

If that's the case - then prove it.

Show us screenshots to prove your open rates are
          consistently '90% minumum.'

Otherwise, people may conclude that you're talking
nonsense and pulling figures out of your arse.

Wouldn't know how to do that (screenshot), so i'll just concede i am talking out my ass.

Just call me a liar, not bothered.

There is one thing worse than a liar, and i rather settle to be a liar than that.

Am i bothered what people think of me?

No, i am not at school now.

    Hi Shaun,

Not taking anyone's sides. But, Those figures are possible.

If the email list is actually a list of buyers.

Let me put it into perspective for you with the
questions that the OP asked in the first post.

Keep in mind, we are talking about a list of
people that have just purchased one of you products.

Also Using "Clubland's" Figures. I have bolded the
    possiblilites.

      Hi Michael,

I don't doubt that 90%+ open rates are possible in
      certain circumstances.

In fact, when I used to use AWeber I had some e-mail
broadcasts that had open rates above 100% (not
unique opens of course). E.g. broadcasts to a buyers
list or for popular broadcasts that get passed around.

However, when some yahoo comes on the forum spouting
stats like 90% minumum, when he claims his list grows at
3,000 per month minumum it just doesn't ring true.

      Why?

Take a look at AWebers graph here...

Only in one narrow band do the open rates go above
the 90 percent range and that's for lists of 1,000 or
      under.

According to the AWeber survey, lists of 5,000+
don't go above 40% open rates.

And I'm not sure if AWeber are using their headline
open rate figures (that count any open as an open)
rather than using the unique open rate figures
      available in their system.

Yes - 90%+ open rates are possible in certain
circumstances - but not consistently over time
      as an average.

I asked the guy to prove his claims but he backed
out - and that leads to one conclusion in my mind.

A claim not backed up with solid proof is meaningless.

P.S. His other claim that 99.1% of readers appreciate
what he sends them sounded fishy too and set of BS
alarm bells. So he'd already done that survey before
this post and had the stats to hand or was he pulling
them out of his arse too?

Depends what type of lists you're on about. There's lots of different types and results and knowledge about each list will change. For example, I'll know more about a list of buyers than some random people who just wanted a freebie of some kind.

Let me ask you this, if i were to pull these stats out my arse, which i would find difficult cos paper cuts, ouch!

How is this any different from these so called vendors of clickbank selling their bs claims you can make this much in 7 days?

If i am talking bs, which i admit i am cos i do not know how to do screenshots. All clickbank vendors talk bs till the cows come home.

    And yet, they still sell.

The only difference between me and them, they know how to do a screenshot. They must be fake though.

And even if i do figure how to do a screenshot eventually to prove it. Whats stopping you from saying, "screenshot is fake". Make a video then, oh sorry, that video is fake screenshots filmed. You know what....

....i might as well leave here. Because everything internet marketing wise is just fake.
