18 Important Search Engine Optimizing Off-Page Factors

The highest priority factor is ranked 1.

The first 7 are not really off-page but they are really important.

Site/Domain requirements:

1. The age of a domain - The older the better, this will make it a lot easier to get high ranked.

2. The Google Trustrank of a domain - Is your website reliable?

3. The history of your website - How was your websites performance in the past? Think about updates, bookmarks, direct visits, clicks of the SERP's. The greater, more, the better

4. The IP-address and location of the webhost - For example, I want to create a Dutch website, then it helps to get a Dutch webhoster as well.

5. The amount of new pages.

6. The amount of exact searches to your domain or company name - For example you have a website called ''donkeyking'', people search on that phrase then it will help you getting better ranks.

7. Is the website registered for Google's webmastertool? - It doesn't affect your SEO ranking's, but it does brings a lot on the table.

Incoming Links

1. Keyword added to the anchor text in the backlink - Very important.

2. Link popularity - The incoming links, you'll need quality and quantity.

3. Relevant incoming links - Are they related to your website.

4. Age of an incoming link.

5. The text around the incoming link - Is it related to your website, think of related articles or a short description

6. The link popularity of the page where your incoming link is located - The higher the PR the better.

7. Location of your backlink - Is your incoming link located in the footer, body or header? The higher placed (header) the better!

Social Media:

1. Facebook and Twitter - They are official SEO factors, links getting shared on Facebook and Twitter do get your website a better ranking.

Miscellaneous:

1. Google PR - This was very important few years ago, it still does have a priority but not very minimum.

2. Xml - HTML Sitemap - Communicate with Google using Google's webmastertool

3. Robots.txt - Google's robot always scans this file, be sure to have this file on your server

Domain age by itself doesn't make any difference at all. How long a site has been indexed and has links does make a difference.

Way too general to be a useful tip.

This can make a difference in some cases but isn't a hard and fast rule.

This is something else that isn't a rule for all sites. Sure, if you're doing news and such, frequent updates are important. If you're doing ancient Aztec basket weaving techniques, constant updates aren't necessary, especially if you have a strong link profile.

It brings nothing to the table.

Not really. What matters is how the link fits within the context of the text on the page, not where it's located.

It's debatable just how much of a factor this is right now. I do know a lot of companies are lining up to game this factor though which will probably force Google to reconsider and/or tone down plans to use it heavily.

You don't have to have it but it can be useful if you want to prevent certain folders from being indexed, such as certain WordPress folders.
