What's the consensus on using a Social Media Manager?

I just wanted to get a general opinion from all the professionals in the forum. What do you think of using a Social Media Manager to handle your day-to-day tasks on Twitter, Facebook, etc?

It has turned out to be a fairly lucrative market, but will it hold?

Just wanted to get some opinions.

Thanks

    Hi Marty,

I do believe there are a lot of small to medium and even large companies that are starting to use social marketing as part of their marketing and branding processes.

A lot of these companies are actually hiring their own staff members to do this process for them. It's mostly the smaller companies that are using social media managers to organise this part of their business process for them.

Mainly because they know they should be doing it...but they dont
know what the hell they are doing.

If you ask me it is still a growing market.

I can see in your signature file that you are a social media marketing manager.

I don't know if you are trying to drum up business for yourself or not, but I do believe that there are quite a few years left in the industry to justify your existence

    Take care,

    Michael Silvester

I wouldnt use one. No reason too, managing social media is easy. Michael is right, the people paying for these social media managers are only doing it cos they think they have to, their whole logic or lack of it for getting a social media manager doesnt even make sense.

Social media is about being personal, being yourself, being genuine. Hiring someone to manage it just says "I cant be assed with this crap but i read in some crappy marketing magazine that my company has to do it otherwise we wont be the shiz anymore"

I was the social media manager for Nissan, Land Rover and Hewlett Packard. My work was quite a lot more advanced than working with Facebook and Twitter (think online competitions which led to physical events) but I understand what you're asking for.

I wanted to do something like this for my blog, as it's good to have more people interacting online, and representing your brand. However, I think it's very hard to ever find someone you're totally comfortable putting the image of your brand out there. Maybe I'm just too conscious about how things are perceived.

Thanks for the feedback. To speak to Michael's comment, I am not looking to drum up business in this post. It is purely academic and I am polling or opinion.

Thanks again for the comments folks.

Big businesses are using Social Media managers because they want to get their brand out in the market place. Just the other day I saw a position for a Social Media Manager for a local hotel in the Atlanta.

From a personality standpoint, I would say that big businesses have no personality their concern is the bottom line (cash flow).

However, for the small to medium business there would absolutely be a different way that would be using social media in regards to the personality aspect.

So yes I think that it would hold, especially companies start to use video marketing as a means to get their messages out.

I am not sure you need a "social media manager" per say. Perhaps you simply need one of the online databases, like HootSuite, to help you to streamline your tasks on Twitter and Facebook.
