How to Write an Effective WF Thread Title

#1 Be Honest.

This in my opinion is the best way to get your point across... let's face it, most of us here are marketers/copywriters to some degree, so if I see a 'salesy' type topic title, trying to 'sell' me on clicking your post? I generally move on...

#2 Be Specific.

I'm getting tired of the 'Check this out' type of generic post titles... it's just wasting precious time... and I rarely click on a thread that has a generic 'hey click here' type of title.

Simply let others know what your topic is about, and you will get more views. (yes, I know you can hover over the topic, and get a snapshot of the first sentence or two, but usually this doesn't help)

#3 If you are asking a question, ask the question in your title!!!

Don't make your post title look like you are posting the answer... here's what I mean by this:

Best way to do xyz....

vs.

What's the best way to do xyz...?

Whenever I click on a Best way to do xyz, and I see that the OP is actually asking the same question that they are implying that they know the answer to, I think to myself, what a waste of time... I'm never looking at so-and-so's post's again... they are just trying to trick me into clicking on their posts... and not sharing the information that I am looking for.

Hope this helps, and please feel free to elaborate on what you think makes a good WF Thread topic/title.

- Jared

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

It's kind of ironic that *this* thread only has one view. LOL.

The title of this thread is a perfect example. I knew exactly what it would be about when I read it, and opened it to see what you had to say on the subject.

You can add some different approaches, depending on your intended result. For example, if this were meant to teach the more recent members, it might be titled:

Newbies: Why your threads aren't getting any responses

At any rate, excellent points. They'll be helpful to anyone who takes your advice to heart.

        Thanks for your insight Paul,

Now think about this... one simple character could have changed the entire meaning...

What if there was a question mark at the end of my title???

You would expect to try and answer this question for the person that posted it wouldn't you?

One little ? can make such a difference... any coder knows that... one simple character that's not there can be the difference in a script working or not.

    Jared,

That should be standard operating procedure for all posters. Perhaps a refresher/reminder each time a member creates a thread?

Thanks Scott... I second that motion! Or even just something new members were forced to read (maybe added to the rules sticky) at least once before posting...

It was a worthy post, some good points. Got some extra views so I guess your experiment achieved its purpose.

Sorry if you thought I was trying an 'experiment'... on the contrary, I was just being honest, (just like I said in my #1 point) trying to share some info to help others write a title that actually gets read.

Just my ideas on how to keep this forum more organized, and easily searched if there are good titles that explain what the topic is about...

Just trying to save some time for everyone in the long run...

Spot on Jared. When titles pertain to the subject matter I create short cuts in a folder on my desktop, so I can revisit the thread. I also make a mental notes of members who create great threads with revelant titles and create bookmarks to their profile page for future reference.

Twist on an old Internet Marketing saying..

"The Money is in the List"
    vs.
"The Money is in the Thread Title"
