How to grow a website for sale

Hello guys,

I decided to make a website about a diet, keep it online for about a year and then to sell. For now I only have a domain, and at the moment I'm writing content for the website.

I'd like to ask someone who is more experienced in this area: what do I need to have on my website right from the start? I don't mean the content, but the technical stuff.

For now I can only think of a tool for tracking the visitors statistics and registering it in some search engines, but as I said, I've never done anything like this before, so any help and tips will be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

My advice to you is to do some solid research before you dive into anything. It sounds to me that you know you want to make money online, but not much more on the subject. SO get some books and reports and read up on IM. If not you will be losing money instead of making it.

    Best of luck,

You're a bit wrong here, Justin... For now all I want to do is to have a website with information and have it visited and indexed. I'm not planning to sell anything via it, no online stores or affiliate programs will be present.

My first goal is to have traffic and visitors, I just want to promote it, not to turn into a source of constant income.

Maybe I'm wrong here (as I said, I haven't done anything like this before), but I'm already doing some research, and maybe I'll change my plans later.

Anyway, thank you very much for your advice!

      Hello Masakiti,

I presume you will be working to get the site ranked in the search engines?

If so, then you should be aware of what Google values or places weight on in their algorithm. I have read, in several places, that social/community friendly sites will have more of an advantage with respect to seo. It would not hurt to include plans for embedding videos.

Here is an interesting thread I saw, yesterday I think. It covers a few things you are looking for.

Also, if you want to realize a higher ROI when you sell, then find some way to monetize the site early on. Adsense or other contextual ad services would work well. If you are not familiar with using them, then it would be worth your time to learn and implement.

Also... keep an eye on browser load times as it has some weight with seo; of course faster is better for positive seo points.
Thanks for the link, Ken, I will most certainly read all I can before launching the website.

For now yes, I just want to have it indexed in the search engines; but your advice about the ads seems to be reasonable also... Still, selling ad space is only possible when you have visitors, so it's not one of the very first things to think of :-)

As for loading -- there will be just text and a couple of middle-sized images, so I don't think it will take long.

      Thanks again for the info!
