X-mind has a much more intuitive feel to it than some of the alternative programs I've tried.

My favorite Mind Mapping tool is iMindMap by the originator
of Mind Mapping, Tony Buzan:

ThinkBuzan - Official Mind Mapping software by Tony Buzan (no affil.)

It isn't cheap but it's worth every penny.

It's intuitive to use and follows most of the recommended
rules of Mind Mapping - especially the use of color, etc.

I use iThoughts on the iPad. iPad is great for mind maps.

Hate to ruin this wonderful thread, but in reality, research has yet to show "mind mapping" any more effective then any other methods.

is now an essential part of my business.

I use and absolutely adore Mind Meister.

It's web based, but there's an iPhone/iPad app, too.

The free version enough functionality to use the basics of idea creation/organization, but you're limited to just a few maps.

The annual fee is very reasonable if you want unlimited maps and a few more helpful features.

freeplane is definitely a big improvement of freemind. you
can make really great looking mindmaps with it.

Hi Kater,

If you need a few more mindmap tools for comparison, my favorites are IHMC CmapTools and Argumentative. Both tools are free and IMHO, have short learning curves. I mainly use both tools to outline my books/reports from research data.

I use Mindjet Mind Manger and iMind from Buzan. Both are great, but each works better for certain tasks for me. For example I use Mind Manger for my Life map/Dashboard, but I use iMind for presentations.

XMind is free to use and has a lot of the features of paid ones, works pretty well. Takes up a lot of computer resources though but I would imagine that would be the case with most of them. They offer a paid version but I haven't felt the need for it yet.

Ha. Noone's mentioned Novamind. That's the one I use and love.

The coolest thing about it: the Layout Engine that rearranges your map *on the fly* so that nodes/branches never overlap one another, which tends to happen when you make big maps using other tools. This was the reason I stopped using Xmind which was great in every other way.... I could no longer read my creations.

With Novamind, as you close a big branch or reopen it, the layout shifts to acommodate.

Export to Mind Manager format. And other stuff.

Novamind's got a few high profile celebrity users like Al Gore.

- One tiny drawback for me: No collaboration.
