EBook distribution (via PAD files as software/.exe)

Yesterday i asked about how to distribute ebooks, and someone replied with a VERY INTERESTING idea to submit them via PAD file to directories.

I got me a PAD file generator, i also have a program for submission of the PAD files to many directories. Figured that out now.

What i am looking for is a free converter which can convert the PDF ebooks into .exe so i can distribute them as software. I got one (PDF2EXE) but i am not satisfied with the result and i am wondering what other solutions are there.

As i understand, the ebook(s) must be in .exe to be able to put them on such directories.

    Hi George,

There is a couple ways you can do it. One is you can get WebSiteZip Packer - Free Html to Exe, Ebook Compiler, E-book Publisher, Ebook Creator/Generator Software</font> which should allow for what you want to do.

You can also make an html page with a download link in it and convert that to exe
    just a couple thoughts

Hey Georg, not sure if you have Winzip, but if you do, then a simple way is to compress it using Winzip Self-Extractor.

Oh my god, that's genius! And they accept this?

Can't see why not. As long as it's an exe. If push comes to shove, PM me and I will help you change your pdf to an html ebook format. I have an html ebook compiler and would be happy to help. Many directories even allow you to submit zip files (they assume you simply zipped your exe file) so, I am sure you won't have any problems by creating an exe using Winzip.

          One tip:

While submission of files to certain sites may require a .exe file, it isn't a great idea to use .exe to distribute files directly to customers.

.exe files are typically blocked by most spam filters, and very few cautious people will open a file that ends in .exe because they have been used to deliver malware like viruses and worms.

Personally, even with the industrial strength malware, spyware and virus checking software I run, I don't knowingly download a .exe file from a site I don't trust, and even then, I always scan it before I open/execute it. Most people I know just delete them.

At work, my spam filters prohibit download or email of any file that ends in .exe. Many domain administrators have similar rules.

I've encountered a couple of sites that downloaded their ebooks as .exe files, and don't use them because of the possibility of them containing malware. If I'm buying an ebook, I expect it to be in a .pdf format and typically avoid others, except .zip packages.

    Hey George,

That was me that suggested that to you. All I did for my pad file was distribute my software as a zip file. Worked for me

    Good Luck

Pete, was looking for that post!

I agree with that *.exe thing - but i changed it to exe since one software complained it would only accept exe? Anyway...need to read up a bit more on this.

      Hi Pete-

I'm trying to implement this strategy, I think I've got most of the basics in place, but I'm a newbie, and I don't want to do anything to screw up my site (been there, done that).

"The last part of building your pad file in padgen is the links. Here you simply need to add in all the links to where the files and the pad file is located along with screenshots and image. The very first link that you will be placing in here however is once again the link to the page you are trying to rank."

This is where I'm stuck-PadGen is asking me for 8 different links, including the Pad XML File I haven't created yet?

If you could clarify what I should be entering in for these links, I would appreciate it-I didn't create a screenshot-do I need to? Very confused, but I may just be overthinking it. But please help, LOL!!

    Good day,
I have been a fan of PAD files and have been using it for linkbuilding and software downloads for over 2 years now. I used this for several clients to increase their links and rankings.

But, among more than 10+ clients we had, 2 of their websites have been hacked. They are pinpointing the exe files that I have uploaded for the PAD files.

Please explain if this is even possible. Can hackers get information/ personal data from the exe files? Can they even enter/ hack the site through these? Can PAD files or exe files really be a threat to website security?

Please help because I am really confused.

    Hi George

If I wanted to distribute a PDF as an exe file my first inclination would be to use a setup compiler - of course coming from a programming background might explain why it would be my first thought!

With a setup compiler you'd distribute a setup.exe file. You users would run it and it would essentially "install" the PDF e-book into a folder, likely in your Program Files folder, and would also create a desktop icon (you can use any .ico file as your icon).

While it is usually used to distribute an actual executable program it's also possible to distribute any file(s) this way, a few years ago I assisted a fellow Warrior in distributing a graphics package like this.

A superb open-source setup compiler is Inno Setup - Inno Setup . Runs under all versions of Windows and is pretty easy to use (at least as far as programming tools go).

Just a thought, best of luck with your product.

    Bill
