How has the IM market changed over the last year

due primarily to the economy and what do you see happening in the near (1 year) and longer term (2 - 5 years) future?

(And let's accept as a given without further need of mention or elaboration that you will always be able to sell good quality stuff to people with money and the desire for that particular stuff.)

I have noticed a little more difficulty selling ebooks and products the past 6 months or so. Having said that, it is not always necessary to sell something to earn online (google adsense, cpa offers, etc.)

And : While the economy of one country or a few countries are declining, there are other countries where the middle class are growing rapidly and have disposable income, such as some countries in South America and several Asian countries. I have thrown up some sites in Spanish and one in Indonesian using google translate to add content to them (outsourcing translation is another option). One of my spanish sites is ranking in the top 3 of google for a very popular keyword and is doing quite well.

    Hope that gives some insight.

3x -- be sure to let us know when that blog post is finished.

greenowl -- Yes, that's excellent insight. I hadn't thought much about other countries/languages. A few months ago I started to learn a little Spanish but my routine for that got interrupted and I didn't get back to it. Hmmmmm.

The reason I'm asking, BTW, is that I've only been involved in IM for about a year, and I'm wondering if what I'm sensing about the market is in reality what's happening.

I agree with X3. With the overwhelming market saturation, branding and trust are key factors more so than ever. People are becoming streetwise, or perhaps netwise, and are becoming aware of the presence of the online salesman, who's role it is to serve and protect the customer. They will "return" to the salesman that pleases them best, no matter that the product is the same in many places.

The Internet is a busy place, getting busier every day. That includes the gazzilions of business being started on a daily basis. Lots more competition in the past year, fer sure.
Of course there's the "Front Page of Google" to keep one abreast, LOL
Best get creative if you can't afford the money that the big dogs are starting to toss around out there. There's a corporate takeover coming in every niche that pays, you can be sure of that...

Knowing full well "how things work online", when I actually have to purchase a piece of software/service/product, I even go so far as to SEEK OUT those online who I completely trust. Because of they great transparent they show, as well as their willingness to go above and beyond, there are times where I have contacted certain bloggers directly and have asked them to send me their affiliate link so that I can purchase through it. I did that recently with my Popup Domination purchase.

I contacted a blogger, and asked for his affiliate link to purchase from. I don't expect alot of people to do this, but, the mere possibility of it happening shows just how deeply important relationships are in this industry. Give...give a little more...and, when you can't give anymore...keep on giving.

It's not a get rich quick thing, by any means. Loyalty is developed and fostered with time, experience, and transparency. The perfect combination, however, can cause people to be extremely loyal for life. In my profession, loyalty is very important...personally, I think it should be incentivized, but that's just my thinking.

Don't think that much will change. There will be the ever present newbies making the guru's rich and the same ways of making money will still apply.

If the economy continues to improve I think you'll see a lot of people who are experimenting with internet marketing returning to their day jobs.

We see a lot of people around these parts who are diving into internet marketing not so much because of desire but due to circumstances.... they lost their job and need money.

Think of the great depression, everybody was moving to California because they heard there were jobs out west. Internet marketing was this recessions California.

If the economy improves and employers start hiring in greater numbers I expect many will migrate back to where they came from.

    More predictions...

Internet marketing will continue to grow but at a slower pace.

Government regulations and state taxes will screw American marketers.

Google will do something that spawns a 33 page thread on the warrior forum.

Facebook will continue to grow and add more features becoming the new AOL (1990's) with people using a single website service for most of their internet activities.

Bill Platt will still be writing really really long posts that follow the plot of The Sixth Sense (a twist at the end you should have seen coming)

People will still be skimming Bill's posts.

I don't know about the market as a whole although I have certainly changed, I unsubscribed from all the so called 'marketers'(I use that term loosely) who abused my inbox with emails telling how wonderful x's new product is when I know that they copied and pasted a swipe email from a JV page offering the affiliate who generated the most sales in the first week going live a $10,000 reward for promoting a $39 product which only had 200 copies available for sale, among other rubbish.
