Is email marketing dead?

I have social networking a site with a contact importer aimed at allowing users to invite their friends. After tracking the traffic to the site it is clear that the majority of people coming to the site are from people sharing on Facebook. Then i thought to myself, the only way i contact my friends online is via Facebook and I only use email for either work on my official email account or hotmail / gmail etc for signing up to new sites. I hardly ever check hotmail / gmail etc to see if i have any communication from friends as i know they will just SMS, bbm or Facebook me. So the question is...

Is email dead for inviting friends to a new site?

With the advent of smartphones with gmail being built into the phone I find that I actually respond better to emails than I used to. The other thing is, that it depends upon your site.

Site's like facebook / twitter grew so large because part of the sign-up process was to access your e-mail account and send all your friends a message telling them you've joined. Hotmail had the famous footer "click here for free e-mail" so e-mail is far from being dead, in the same way that direct mail will always work.

Also if you have a marketing product and rely on affiliates then the only way to generate lots of sales is via e-mail marketing. Real people don't want to clutter up their profile with marketing links and send their friends to a site where they may end getting a comission but losing a friend / starting a family fued.

Even if it is declining, I think it's smart to stay in the game. It's always good to have your eggs in many baskets.

Email marketing will not die, emails will be always important, for so many stuff that I'm convinced it will not die. Yes, the strategy will die someday, but by then we've found new strategies to use.

Is it better to get someone to share your link on Facebook once or emai their hotmail list. For me the one share on Facebook is more effective

E-mail marketing won't die, it was one of the first ways to communicate on the internet and it will always be apart of the internet.
