How does Facebook work?

Dear fellow Warriors, I have just signed up for Facebook and I now have 75 friends, but I am not sure how to market on Facebook. I don't want to do it wrong and have my account deleted, is it ok to send links to a product to my friends? Also does Facebook allow hot links?

Any other info would be appreciated also, because I am totally new to Facebook.

Thank you
Clint

    Hi Clint,

There are some ebooks on marketing with Facebook. Do a search on something like "Facebook marketing" or "Facebook ebook". It's going to be difficult for someone to give you a tutorial on Facebook in this thread.

Your friends on Facebook would not really be expecting to receive promos from you, and you may get complaints. You would be better to start a Facebook "group" on a certain subject and invite your friends to join it. You can message the group with an occasional link.

Thank you Barry, I guess it's a lot like My Space from what you said, I was hoping it allowed a little more marketing than that, but thank you for the reply.

    Clint,

Facebook was really strange to me when I first started. I didn't know what all the features were and where to find the buttons.

The same techniques that you use for Myspace are in play with Facebook. Make a nice profile and keep adding friends, make comments on their Wall,
use Add notes (similar to the blog on myspace) and Share link to send all your friends a link.

Both sites do suffer a great deal from the spammers, but I think Facebook is certainly the better choice out of the two.

Unsure if you've tried Yuwie as yet, but the blogging feature is quite neat and Google even tracked a backlink from them and so I would check them out as well.

The thing with social networks is that people don't like to be bombarded with sales jargon, links and what not! They are great for networking with webmasters, but I would always try to reach for the search engines where visitors are looking for solutions; whilst on sites like Facebook, they pretty much just wanna chat along with friends.

You can use Facebook like you would use Twitter. Update everyone with what you're doing. (I just told everyone I was posting on the Warrior Forum.) Keep the story going. Not every update should be about the product you're pitching. And no pitch should be a blatant pitch. Just let people know what you're doing as you build your business. Keep it indirect...at least most of the time.

    You can post videos.

You can start and/or participate in discussion forums on particular niche topics.

And, as was mentioned by Mr. Iser above, you can buy PPC ads.

You can also make fan pages. These are meant for business, so you can be more direct on these pages. These pages are open for spidering, but the outgoing links are nofollow.

There are lots of things you can do to build an audience and get the word out without getting banned.

I encourage you to try it. Learn more about it. See what it can do for you. Facebook has a ton of users and a lot of traffic. It's too valuable not to use it.

Facebook is definitely more for networking than blatant marketing, but it can be incredibly lucrative in that regard.

Thanks everyone for the information about Facebook. Can you believe this post is #10 on Google out of 168,000,000 sites, I don't know how long it will stay there, but that is amazing.

Does anyone see any traffic coming from Facebook or Myspace? Or do you think they're a waste of time?
