For someone just starting out...

I am in the process of setting up my website and I don't have much work to display on it at this time. I have a few articles I wrote as a correspondent for a local newspaper and that is about it. How do I aquire work without much to show for myself? What sites are the best for getting work when you are a newbie like myself? I am looking for work mainly as a ghostwriter. Thank you in advance for any light you can shed.

There are freelance sites like elance.com where you can bid on writing jobs.

    Hi Aimee,

One suggestion I have is to read my report in my sig below - it talks about doing what you seek to do. But to answer your question, I highly recommend you seek out sites like Fiverr.com, Freelancer.com, and right here inside the Warrior Forum (Warriors Looking to Hire You) for work. While Fiverr is $5 per job, most people use that as a testing ground to find writers they can use over and over again.

As you would see from reading my report, people hire over and over again. If you would like, drop me a PM or add me on Skype and we can talk more.

    Best of luck!

    Cheers,
    Brian

Begin by being active on this forum. Visit other writer's postings and see how they structure their offers, pricing, etc. Respond to some posts here so that you have a little post history and if possible be helpful so people thank you in your posts - which helps your credibility. Try to think about your services so that you have a point of difference from the other writers.

Offer a limited number of "review copies" (free of charge) of your service to established members of the forum so that they can recommend you.

    Hope this helps...

Did you set up a static site or a blog? A blog, most likely Wordpress, would seem to be the best way to display examples of your work plus all your contact details as well as being easy to keep the site updated.

Elance is excellent but it can be slow until you have established a reputation.

    Hi Aimee,

Let me tell you what I did a few months ago.....

1.I used Craigslist for 2 purposes.....

1.To search the writing gigs posted and then applied for them
2.To post my own ads offering up my services.

It will take time to actually make money from your own site so if you want immediate work, find other ways to get writing jobs right now. You can easily find a couple of decent gigs within a few days on Craigslist if you have a good resume ready to go.

    2.Go B2B locally

I don't know where you live, but if you have a large business district, print up flyers and hand them out to business owners. I got a couple sales doing this. It's kind of fun too because I enjoy talking to and meeting people.

Let me know if you need any help finding some gigs to get yourself going.

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention........

Since you don't have a lot of samples available, go make a few. Go write some quality articles on Ezinearticles.com and once they are published, add them to your resume. This will enhance your chances of landing a gig.

You don't write articles in English, do you? What language do you write them in? Just wondering.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Actually, my first sign wasn't even the structure of the message, but rather the content - we're talking about getting started as a ghostwriter, and here we have someone promoting their own services to someone who wants to do the same. Tells me something about ability to follow instructions - the first important thing before the final product.

Haha, nice catch. And props to you for actually understanding what he was saying! I wasn't even paying attention to the message he was actually trying to convey because the grammar was so bad.

You can put up a Wordpress website. You can use Blogger, but having your own domain is important. Prospective ghostwriting clients will take you more seriously when you have your own domain. Post your article samples on your site. Then, be active on Warrior Forum and other forums where people look for ghostwriters. Use your signature to promote your services. You can also bid on freelance sites like Elance and oDesk.

I suggest that you get some social proof as well. Have a page for client feedback on your site. Post ghostwriting gigs at Fiverr. Impress your buyers by doing more than what they expect from you (write high quality articles, and submit them before the deadline). If they are happy with your service, ask them to visit your website to post their feedback. With some good feedback under your belt, you'll have a good chance of getting a lot of clients.

    Good luck!
