Do Spammers Really Make Money?

Everyday, I check my emails and I see lots of spam mails promoting one internet marketing product or another. Recently, I opened a new email which I use for my paypal account and within one week, I started receiving emails from different 'companies' with one offer and another. The funny thing is that, this new email has never been use on any website except on paypal yet I get junk emails everyday from people and companies I dont know.

Please fellow warriors, do these spammers really make money by spamming people's email? We all know that email marketing is a great instrument for making money online but only when the recipients give their permission.
Just yesterday too, a student of mine who has been struggling to make money online for long sent me an email that his major challenge is getting a software to blast to over 50k email list and more. Then I asked myself, where and how do this spammers get people email even when the email is not visible in the search engines. Also, do they really make money, if not why are they increasing daily?

    in short, yes, lots of money. They don't just have to get you to purchase something which the email is promoting... The emails sent by spammers can infect your PC with malware upon their opening, turning it into a mailing bot effectively increasing their sending amounts 10 fold, so if you don't purchase something someone else further down the line will. There are many more ways that spammers make money out of mass mailing though.

    Since when could you get a virus by reading the email? I thought this is 21st century.
