Seperating Wheat From Goats.

Here it goes - I get hundreds of blog comments each day and being, shall we say, a little cynical, tend to assume most are spam links.

But I'd like to encourage my dear readers to contribute.

How do you seperate the wheat from the goats to horrendously mix a metaphor?

If you have wordpress you can get creative so to speak. Turn all the spam comments into conspiring or positive comments about your blog.

Well that is one way to look at it. Otherwise, you have to do what the rest of us do. Install a captcha code and humans (more often than not) will end up posting on your blog. I sort of did that with my one blog because I was sick of the spam comments.

There are basically three types of posters:

    1) Spammer
    2) Trying to contribute
    3) Contribute + Hoping to get a backlink

Its quite easy to spot no. 1, but 2 and 3 is a bit hard to differentiate. As long as we see them trying to contribute something (although sometimes trying too hard) and not spamming then I guess it's a win win for both

The spam I receive to my WordPress blog are obvious. Most sound as if they went through two cycles of an English as a second language article spinner.

I have nearly 1,000 "unmoderated" posts now that I just haven't processed yet, all spam. What I have recently decided to do is to add them all to an email list and see if I will have any luck. You never know, although I suspect that many of the emails are bogus. But, if not, I have a free list to try to convert.

That is an interesting idea. I would worry about spam complaints but since they essentially contacted you first maybe that is not an issue? I would have tons of prospects every week if I tried that. I guess you could start off with a little humor - "Are you a human? If so you might be interested...." Keep us posted.

If you communicate with that free list, then now you are going to be accused of spamming.

That's the way I do it. "Great post." etc doesn't cut it. The links they post are pretty much a give away, too. Nobody is on my site to look at Ipod ads or IM crap - they want rocks n related.

If the comment sounds wrong, trash it right away. If you come to a point where you waste your hours moderating comments on your blog. You might want to hire a virtual assistant to moderate for you, assuming that VA is capable that is ^_^
