Hey

I am building a new double opt-in list right now. So far i got 25 optins, but only ten of them confirmed their optin.

The emailadresses are all looking like real ones. Is this the same on your double opti-in list???
please let me know

thx

I think this depends on several factors like what you are offering specifically to get the list built to begin with (freebie offer for example), how targeted the traffic is that's signing up...etc etc. So many factors here it would be hard to nail it down to one specific result for all lists across all niches for every marketer.

    hi

it's the good old free pdf report offer and most of the traffic comes from very targeted ads

I personally think that having a double opt in is over rated. I notice it doesn't make a difference with overall sales. Also, by only asking for their email address you might see higher conversion rates.

You will still be able to build a great relationship with them and see all the benefits of building a list.

I've always used double optin via aweber, recently I wanted to import a buyers list so used single optin at icontact works well and gets just as much response

So, are you saying in your test, double opt-in and single opt-in got the same response? If so, there was no benefit from single opt-in?

John, "I usually take a screen shot of the inbox showing the autoresponder confirmation email, and I tell them to confirm by clicking on the link," is great advice.

esk, I just experienced the same thing you discovered. I did my first product launch. We invited our friends from facebook to our launch site. around 120 people went to the squeeze page. Out of the people who went to the site, 12 people opted in to see the next video. The problem was that, when they went to the confirmation page, they didn't click on the confirm link. Then, people contacted me to say they could not see the next video that they would have automatically been taken to after they clicked the confirm link.

Also, the people that did click on the confirm link in the email did not watch the next video. This was strange.

What I learned from my first launch is that the double optin is very confusing for those who have never done double optin before. I will take Johns advice above if I do a double optin again. Now I plan to only do single optin unless my customers have done double optin before.

You should show them what they need to do to get your free report or whatever you are giving away. I usually take a screen shot of the inbox showing the autoresponder confirmation email, and I tell them to confirm by clicking on the link. I don't know if you are using aweber, but a lot of people don't like the word "subscription". Subscriptions usually cost money, and I think this prevents people from opting in.

Very good point, John. I suspect that some of the new subscribers opt in to a lot of stuff all the time. Therefore, they may not have noticed whether they actually received the "good old pdf" or not....

Whilst double opt-in is the best way to go for building quality email lists, i always go for single opt-in.

I find the biggest problem with double opt-in, and probably what's happening in your case is that some people just can’t be bothered to confirm their requests!

thanks for the screenshot advice. Yes i do use aweber and i wrote an detail description of what to do to get the report but I think I'm going to put a screenshot on. thx.

If the confirmation ratio won't increase, i will probably switch to single opt-in.

If in my next launch I use single optin, will people not put in their real name and email, but put in friend's emails? Does this happen?

i just wanted to update you. Without a very detailed description on the thank you page i got ten confirmations out of 25 optins. With screenshots and detailed description i got 50 confirmations out of 73 opt ins. So this really works well. Especially if the people in your niche are not perceived as computer cracks.

You definitely need a video or something on your thank you page explaining what needs to be done. Have you tested using the aweber video thank you pages?

Aweber.com - Smart Video Thank You Pages

I also recently changed from double optin to single optin. I am not saying you should do the same though. If people are not getting enough confirmations from their double optin subscribers it means either their thank you page is not clear enough, or the freebie you are offering is not good enough that people can be bothered to go and confirm their email.

Another way to cut down on the bogus email addresses is to make it clear on the optin page that the freebie will be delivered by email. That way most people wont bother with a fake email address.

hey i thought about changing to single optin too, can you tell me if the people who don't confirmed will be still on your list if you change to single optin?

A good method to get more confirmations is to give away a free gift, and then change the AWeber confirmation subject line to read, "Get Your Gift Here" then make the confirmation link go straight to your download page.

yeah I did it like this, but I'm leaving alot subscribers on the table anyway.
Do someone of you know if my the subcribers who haven't confirmed yet, are still on my list as activate subscribers if I chance to single optin?

You can't just change a current list from double optin to single optin. Once you start adding subscribers you are stuck with double optin. The only way to have a single optin list is to create a new one from scratch and deactivate double optin BEFORE you add any subscribers to that list.

I'm not actually sure that all accounts are able to de-activate double optin. I can but I have a feeling newer accounts do not have control over this - I may be wrong.

Also note with single optin, any bogus email addresses that look spammy like as fsgshjdkflkfkfhsdg@hotmail.com, etc will still have to confirm even if you are using single optin.

I would suggest against double opt-in because it really prevents your list from growing as much.
