Going to my first Internet Seminar

I have wanted to attend something and not only learn but most importantly to network. Just made my reservations to PracticalProfits in Florida in a couple weeks.

I need to ramp it up and this is my first step in my plan for 2011 and increasing my income a great deal from the Internet.

National events have helped my greatly in my offline company which has been my primary business, I expect similar results.

What benefits have others had by attending their first event ?

    I have been to a few IM seminars over the years, and here are my observations:

    Don't expect to learn a lot in the sessions. You may. And if you do, that is a nice bonus. Some are too basic, some are on stuff that no longer works, some are nothing but pitch fests, etc. And some of them are useful. If you get a few good nuggets you can use, be grateful.

    The value is in the hallway and the bar. See who you can connect with. You can find JV partners, mentors, interview subjects, etc. at seminars.

    To get the most benefit, try to find out who will be attending before you even get there. Are you on the lists of one or more "gurus" who say they will be at the event? Search blog posts, Facebook and Twitter streams for people mentioning that they will be there. See someone you want to meet? Drop them a line and see how you might connect.

    It helps to have a couple of specific goals in mind before you go. Are there certain types of people you want to meet? Is there something you really need to learn?

    I will be at Practical Profits. I have partnered with a lot of the panel in the past. I am not speaking at this particular seminar, but I am still going. Why? For the networking! As IdeaLady said, the real value is at the bar over some beers! That's where you make your deals and build high value relationships!

      The problem with that guide is that it tells you not to get drunk. What? I'm supposed to be the only sober one there?

        All seminars have a pitch element, its how the speakers get paid, unlees they charge you 2k plus for a ticket

        But most speakers understand that to get people to buy their package they have to give content in the presentation... the usual ratio is on a 90 minute presentation 70 to 75 minutes content 15 to 20 minutes pitch

        thats a good enough ratio to make them worth while going to

        And the extra plus side is the net working and out of hours chats and brainstorming sessions
        For those who aren't familiar with Practical Profits. It's a ZERO pitch event. Leave your wallet in the room - we won't sell you anything at these events. They are 100% content based.

        We also charge $197, about $1800 LESS than other events that are pitch fest.

        Not the best business model I'm sure but we do it because we want to give back and that's why we sell out every time while others are struggling to get butts in the seats.

          I'm sure you build a great following with these seminars, just by the way you guys (and girls) get involved in this. Every speaker was very approachable, and that is so much different from seminars where the speaker comes up to talk for a few minutes, tries to sell something and then is out of there never to be seen again that day (or the entire event for that matter).

          I really loved this seminar and I'm sure I will attend other seminars, especially seminars like this one. Even if I have to travel all the way from the Netherlands to attend seminars like these.

        Actually, the Practical Profits bunch holds no pitch seminars. I think the cost is a couple of hundred.

      I go to trade shows and conferences all the time, and they never even have anything to do with IM. But, that is where my target market goes. This month I went to the CES electronics trade show in Las Vegas. It actually was one big crappy sales pitch fest, and although there were many fascinating and interesting speeches, the real value was in the networking. I got 47 new clients, one of them while in the restroom.

    I wanted to go to PracticalProfits but my schedule just wouldn't allow me! Some good tips Roberts giving away there!

    Even if it was a pitch feast the main element is the networking! These days I don't even go to listen to to the speakers I go mainly to network, and either get new JV partners or even private clients!

    Go in with an open mind and I will love to hear how you get on!

      In UK there is gonna be a change coming this year, I think. We have had too many recent "pitch fests" and the audience are tiring of them - very quickly. Having been involved in the events industry myself until recently, (when I took up IM), I realise that the promoters have to make their share if the event is a free one (which is a very typical model in UK). I think that better value is given by the speakers if the event is a paid event - not a massive price, but a price at which the promoter gets his room hire and staff costs paid and a modest profit, just off the butts on the seats. Then the speaker can offer better value and he is not expected to make massive sales to feed the promoter as well.

    At my first seminar (AFFCON- Denver 2009) I met people in the IM industry who I'm still really good friends with. We've even partnered up on some projects.

    Try not to take a note on every little thing that you think is important. Your head will explode. When something sticks out to you, write down everything you can about it, and get to work on it as fast as you can.

    Also, try not to be too creepy when approaching big IM folks.

      No fear in that, we all put our pants on the same....I am a very successful business owner offline BUT, I want time freedom which is not possible in my service related business.
      My wife has terminal Pancreatic Cancer and I want to be able to spend more time NOT working as much ( I do about 90 weekly hours now ).

    Final Tip - Only use 2 sheets of paper (preferably double page) to take notes

    Reason - Brain overload, if you can keep it as limited as possible you are more likely to take action on what you have on two pages than 10-20

      Thanks for the tip however, that does not work for me....I may take 1 page of notes per speaker but would never limit to only 2 pages total. If I understand correctly, they will be having 10 speakers and none are permitted to pitch their products, it is to be a pitch free event, that is one of the reasons I selected this one.

      Looking forward to more thoughts, ect.

        I view Internet Seminars the same way I view most IM products. They are distractions. Most people have enough to do already. Most people have what they need already.

        Have you done anything with what you already have?

        Sure, there is value in conferences. But if you haven't made much cash, then what's the point?

          Had I not made money nor a somewhat serious dedication to increasing same, I would never have decided to go.

          In my offline business, seminars and most importantly the networking at them has served me quite well.

    The mistake I first made was just sit there like a loner and not mingle.

    I have been mingling since, and now people come up to me and say hi.

    I do not shut them down either. Make sure you mingle, make friends ...one of these turned into a business partner and we made good money. So you never know who you might meet.
