How I increased my affiliate earnings

Hi everyone, Im new on here and I have picked up lots of useful information so I thought I'd share with any newbies a little tip I realised after 3+ years in affiliate marketing.

I've been building the usual affiliate websites based on keyword research and basic wordpress blog sites with mixed results. Most of my IM friends have been doing the same thing and when I check out their sites the main thing that stands out is that lots of them look rubbish!

I noticed the biggest increase in sales when I invested more time/money in creating a professional looking website with a brand name. Yeah it takes time but the results are definately worth it

For example one of my sites in the lingerie niche was ranking fairly well and getting enough traffic but to be honest it did look like millions of other wordpress affiliate sites. When I changed it to a custom built site with a brand name and logo etc I found that visitors were spending far longer on the site and sales increased 5 fold!!

To many affiliate markerters this is pretty obvious but I just thought I'd share it.

Web users are getting more sophisticated and want to see quality, professional looking sites.

Hope this post makes sense, because I've been on the wine all night

James

    I agree.

But, you don't even need a custom built site. There are plenty of premium wordpress themes that are free and look great. You just have to do a little digging and you can come up with some great looking themes

    • The best way that I increased my affiliate earnings and in fact actually started making earnings, was realizing that what you are selling on your site isn't really that important. What is important is getting that site in front of people who actually want to buy what's on it. It sounds really simple when you put it like that, but that simple idea rocketed my IM business.

So, what methods do you use to get your site in front of people? SEO, Paid traffic or Social?

Yes you can use a free theme but OP has claimed that his visitors have spent more time on his site along with a 5X spike in sales as direct result of using a custom built theme.

This doesn't mean that every new marketer should go out and build a custom site. A new marketer can use a free theme, work on building traffic and ranking then after seeing enough traffic coming in...upgrade to a custom site if they choose to.

        Totally agree,

        I used to do this,

I would waste so much time--getting everything perfect--and sometimes I would abandon the project becasue I could not get it just right.

When what I should have been doing was--getting it going--driving traffic--and getting those all important first couple of sales.

Then I could have used that money to make the site look better--or have a logo done for it, etc.

My advice, pick a niche, get a site up, and start getting traffic.

Nothing happens, until you do something.

I'm already clued up on web design and effective SEO so let see how it goes.

Thanks for the breakdown of the process.

I send more traffic and compose a series of emails to broadcast or add to my autoreponder. Thing I have learned is once I ad the emails I then a lot of times need to optimize things like the subject line to get the open rate up and things like the content of the body to get the click on the link but thats what is fun about it. A couple of days and most of the time I found the conversion sweet spot... Cha ching... I just gave mysef a raise. ;-)

First impressions of your brand are huge, especially as people are bombarded more and more everyday with generic WP sites. I do agree though, there's plenty of cheap pre-made themes that people can opt for prior to going the custom built route.

    Hey James,

Thank you for your inspirational story.

This might be helpful especially to those who are into building niche websites using Wordpress and trying to rank on Google.

Keep up the good work and let us know your progress.

    Thanks for the tips James.

BTW I've just started a site in the lingerie type of niche, is it easy to get traffic without much link building? The keywords seem quite competitive in the Google Adwords tool but I guess this is because they're shopping related and good to bid on, it doesn't necessarily mean they're hard to rank for.

Also does Google sandbox sites in this niche for longer than other sites? I've not got any visitors yet but I'm hoping to drum up a bit of referral traffic from my other sites.
