Socrates Theme vs other Blog Monetization WP Themes?

Hi everyone,

Im new here :-)

Im wondering if any of you could share your opinions with me about Wordpress themes.

I bought the Socrates Theme and it seems cool, what do you all use to monetize your blogs??

What do you find:

1. The easiest to customize - colours, placing ads where you want them, etc?
2. The fastest to do your thing with?
3. The most customizable to make it stand out and be unique?

Your opinions will be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot :-)

Best wishes, Clare :-)

    Hi Clare,

Yesterday, I changed one of my custom designed (by myself, lol) themes to a WordPress theme called Barthelme. Barthelme has the advantage of looking non-blogish.

It raised my AdSense clickthrough with 200%.

I added the adverts codes myself in the theme code.

If you want to make it unique, it will take work from you. So this theme is far from perfect, but it served my immediate purpose.

I lik eFlexsqueeze. I like the way I can customize each site I use it on, and I can pretty much use any color scheme I want to.

You can change it around a lot as far as placing your navigation. Add borders and change the colros of almost anything oin your site.

use 2 sidebars, 1 sidebar, no sidebars and do complettely custom html code if you want to.

I also have thesis, but I have to work really hard with css to make it look good.

For paid themes, I like heatmap over socrates. For niche themes, I like adsense niche theme, and for free, I always like panorama.

I saw Socrates a lot from back in the day, I would say if you could combine that with optimize press you could seriously do some damage. I don't think sales / capture pages could possibly look better !

I looked up Kajabi as the original optimize press, but it sounds way expensive in comparison.

I guess in a way it depends on exactly what you hope to accomplish with the site where you are implementing this theme.

As an example, on most of my blogs where I am more focused on building a community and providing great content I opt for the Thesis theme. For a site that used to be focused on Adsense revenue, I was using the old MistyLook theme. Sure it was completely played out but it sure converted well. That same site I now use a theme called Clear-line that I like quite a bit.

Also, again depending on the goal for your site, you might be surprised how less flair and flashy design can actually improve your conversions. With all of that said, I have not personally worked with the Socrates theme but have heard fairly positive feedback.

Socrates theme is a pretty cool theme, especially for the price. It has some really good features and I like how you get all of them headers.

I've tried out several different premium themes, but hands down my favorite right now is..... HEADWAY.

They just recently won the best theme Framework for 2010 award.

The Headway theme gives you complete control over your entire site without touching any coding. It's all drag and drop & point and click, literally.

    As far as monetization goes....

It really depends on what type of niche your site is for. Experimenting with different styles, colors, locations and etc... will be necessary. I like to mix it up and use a little of everything, adsense, Amazon, and other affiliate offers.

    Good luck!

Hey thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated!

I will check out all those that you said :-)

I dont like the way Socrates lists previous posts, just in the middle of the page in huge font... (Ive linked my pages to categories in the nav bar)

This maybe something I can change myself but I can't see a way to do it.

Their adwords/clickbank text links, dont fit in the bar that they are designed to go in - a 3 line ad does but a 4 line one doesnt!

Ive tried changing the padding, etc - been on their forums, and been ignored with PMs, after some initial really good help!

So, Im tempted to change themes, but I think I may explore it a little more first.

Do you guys or anyone else reading this think that paid themes are worth the money, or are there loads of good free ones out there?

Im primarily trying to build info/useful sites, with a couple of banners, and links to amazon products mostly - since Im still learning!! But Id like the flexibility to expand and try new things once I start sending more traffic to the sites I already have :-)

Im OK with html but not brilliant and Id rather pay for something than figure it out, coding wise ;-)

Now, Id like my sites to look less bloggy, and more website like - but still be able to easily insert the monetization stuff :-)

Have a great day everyone and best wishes, will check back here sooner next time :-)

      Clare :-)

Have you looked at the Catalyst theme, it has over 600 design options and uses child themes if you want, instant customization with 22 skins, use it on unlimited sites.

I can't use some of the advanced features yet, but I like how I can customized each and every page. It costs $97, but it is worth the cost IMHO.

        Warmest regards,

        Ron H.
