Am I correct in thinking that alexa rank is purely traffic based?

    The thing is, Alexa is skewed quite a bit by people simply using the Alexa toolbar. It's not the purest form of measurement, although I DO like to use to show people general trends in growth/traffic.

    Only aking 3 months ago I set up a subscription with a backlink company, for 7500 backlinks a month, just checked it a couple of days ago and i can find only 30 backlinks to the site. So i emailed them and the reply i had was along the lines of well you may not see them but you have gone up 600k places in alexa? I guess this is nothing to do with them and they owe me a refund?

      Dont judge anything at all on alexa numbers. They don't really mean jack.

      If someone told me that crap I would ask for a refund because they obviously don't know what they are doing. You paid for 7500 backlinks, that is what they need to deliver. Period

      hm...I would question if they REALLY know what they are doing in the first place if they are offering to make you 7500 backlinks in a month. Honestly, that could be perceived as seriously 'unnatural' and you 'could' be penalized for that.

      If that's what you want, and if that's what the company said they'd do, and they didn't provide what they said they would (whether it's good or bad), I would have to say they owe you a refund. Even if your site went up in Alexa, you DID pay for those backlinks.

    Alexa rank is based on traffic indeed but ONLY the traffic from those who installed and using the Alexa Toolbar.

    It's not reliable for that reason...but is a ranking factor for who knows what real reason!

    Alexa rank may not be very accurate, but it's a pretty good guide, when a site has a spike or dip in traffic, it will show on alexa.
