Hey Jared,

I'm not opposed to getting a ton of followers. I just don't like the methods that most people use to achieve it, and I personally think that it's not that really effective because in the end they really don't care much about you.

Now building a rabid base of true followers, that's an entirely different story, and one I'm all for. That's where the real money comes in.

This is really cool information, Todd. One of the posters suggested that you shouldn't post affiliate links all over the place, but what about just a few and disperse them between all of the other "tweets"?

I had to watch your vid a second time to try and understand... but I'm still a tiny confused on your stance...

I completely agree with your main subject, that quality is so much more valuable than quantity... just like targeted traffic is much more effective than spam/junk traffic... but how can you make sure your tons of loyal true followers are getting the attention they are seeking... it's kind of like loading up my skype or other IM programs with thousands of contacts that you never actually talk to, & just send them a bulk 'newsletter' every so often...

People on twitter don't want that, they want to actually connect with you, get a personal message back, something other than the norm... a genuine two way street, and as you said it takes time to twit back to all your followers...

Thanks for the sharing this networking strategy. It's to bad that some narrowminded people can't see the value in developing a network like this. Just because your followers don't buy your product does'nt mean that if its a good product that they won't pass it on to there list and sell it for you as your affiliate. Instead of focusing on how much money you're going to make from doing this, think of the potential ideas you could possible get from the people you're following. You never know where your next money making idea will come from. Anyway thanks again Todd.

Jared,

I don't make sure people get the attention they are seeking. I try when I can, but if someone wants to guarantee attention, then they break out the wallet and join my mastermind. That will ensure they get the attention they deserve.

I devote my time and attention to paying customers first. Anything more then that is considered "extra credit" in my book.

However, I do try to get back to people as much as I can. But time is not exactly an abundant resource, and I'm not going to let myself become a slave to my computer.

There are so many things to master as an IM'er. This forum is great, the discussion is great!

I enjoy seeing a strategy, then seeing others improve upon and give warnings about potential pitfalls. It takes a bit to absorb everything, but aside from the few disciplines I have - I don't know how I'd get past the learning curve so quick besides actually doing it and most likely falling flat on my face.

I have used this technique to add hundreds of friends. I am getting small amounts of traffic from Twitter when I post updates. Not great traffic, but every little bit counts!

I used Twitter to gain 2000+ followers in about 2-3 weeks, and took all of about 1 hour per day ... My method was similar to the OP, but what I do is

1) I find who is following who... so I go to person X (in a particular niche) and I follow the 5-10 most recent followers
2) and then go one of these people that I just followed, and I follow 5-10 of the people that just recently followed them.
3) Every week I go into my followers list, and I remove those that aren't following me or don't have an image uploaded by clicking on the followers link, and then click next. in the address bar you'll see ?page=2 then you can change this to ?page =100 to get to the 2000 visitor. Click previous and start removing the oldies that aren't following you.
4) Goto step 1.

My reasoning for choosing the top 5-10 is that they are currently active on twitter, and very likely to reciprocate a follow (huge reciprocation rate) and they have the same interest as the original tweeter.

My reason for getting rid of old followers that aren't following me is that they aren't really interested in me or what I might have to say.

My reason for getting rid of all followers/non-followers that don't have an image is that they aren't really serious enough for my taste. Show me that you care, and have a face, even if a logo, or scenary, no upload means no follow.

I've also found that people of all walks of life are just as interested in what I have to say as those that are in any particular niche... Maybe it's just the services I offer - not sure

As far as tweets are concerned, post fun stuff - alltop.com (from Guy Kawasaki) is an awesome way to find interesting material in a hurry, both on topic and off topic. Be real. be fun. be real fun. and occasionally post a link to a recent affilate link or blog post - but make it every 30th post or so.

Also, a tip I read somewhere (Net Effect maybe) was to leave a powerful link up for a few days - if you are launching a product, tweet it and leave it there for a few days before you tweet again to maximize the exposure.

One more thing - Don't waste time with twitter - I spent a week getting it set up so that I have about 2200 followers and naturally gain about 5-10/day w/o trying. Now I spend only 20 minutes/week on Twitter (or about 3-4 minutes / day ) checking up on things and Tweeting.

And one more thing after my one more thing I use TweekLater.com as a way to automate my followings and to get a digest of any replies that i've gotten - there are other services that they've added, but Ihaven't checked them all out. Feel free to check them out for me and let me know what you find.

I see people saying this, and it baffles me. Twitter is a fantastic place to network and find new clients. I get almost all of my press release clients from Twitter, and since I joined Twitter I have been invited to be on the Consumer Advisory Council for PRWeb, asked to give a seminar for PRWeb, found numerous joint venture partners, and have sold numerous copies of the ebook "The Overnight Guru" by tweeting a link to it. (Note: there's a little more to selling things than JUST tweeting a link; don't take this as advice to go on Twitter and blast out sales links all day long.)

Sometimes I have weeks where I only get one new client from Twitter; last week I got FOUR and I have inquiries from 3 new potential clients. And they are people with offline businesses who pay a LOT better for my services than online businesses.

Had I concentrated on quality I most likely would not have followed that person, he wouldn't have followed me back, and the entire opportunity would have been lost.

Twitter doesn't have a business model, nor prospects for one. Use it while you can.

I never try to guess who to follow - other than not following obvious spambots. One of my clients, for instance, is Free Online Flash Games - UltimateArcade.com, a Los Angelos based online arcade game company. I would never have assumed they'd pick me, here in Florida, to write their press releases for them. But they've been a fantastic client.

I agree - what kind of real RESULTS are coming from these thousands of followers?

I think it's better to spend more time interacting with current followers and building relationships with them, than trying to get new ones.

However, it is of course beneficial to build a bigger list of followers, I just think too many people focus on *only* gathering a huge list of followers, but then see little to NO results from that huge list. It simply becomes an ego boost that does nothing at all for their bank account.

Spend 70% of your time relationship building (after all, that's what it's there for) and the remaining time gathering new followers.

Takes alot of clicking and page loading but, if you've got the time, it's a great way to connect with other people with the same interest(s) you have.
As Twitter being a highly powerful viral marketing tool I can imagine using Twellow to help you connect with some key players, you'll grow a large list of followers in no time.

Yep tweetlater.com is fine for sending an automated response. Just make sure you don't do one like this... 'Thanks for the follow... check out my thang here' or 'buy my thang'.

Also don't auto follow people. I did that for a while. I now go in and check each person out. If they have nothing in common with me (e.g. they are into holistic something or other, etc) I don't follow them. I also now NEVER follow anyone who can't even be bothered to at least put an Avatar on there (I prefer real photos).

I see people on there with NO picture, NO posts and they are following 1999 people! The worst bit is, 894 are following them back!!

I'm with Jason on this one. Unless you follow people who you have an interest in (and it may be just that they are fellow IMers) and they have an interest in you, what's the point?

This will certainly get you a lot of followers, but if you use Qwitter you'll find that many of them drop you at the first sight of anything resembling spam...even if it isn't.

I prefer building small targeted lists, a few hundred at a time. Works much better for me.

I agree. I tend to unfollow people who have to tweet every 30 seconds or so.

Those 20 followers are probably from people who use scripts to automatically follow you when you follow them. Now I just can't figure out how my traffic just jumped 20 page views!

Most definitely. Personally, I can't see the point of having 12000 followers who do nothing more than bombard you with affiliate links every time you log on. What are the chances that one of the twitter product pushers even sees your tweet, much less buys anything you tweet about?

Is Qwitter working for you? I haven't received anything from it for at least a month or two.

And, even when it is working, it's not entirely accurate. When it tells you that so-and-so unfollowed you after you tweeted such-and-such, that's not always accurate. When Qwitter was working for me, I know that some people unfollowed me and Qwitter didn't send the message right away, and associated their unfollow with a tweet that happened after that had unfollowed.

Qwitter is useful for seeing who unfollows you (when it's working, that is), but you can't rely on its data to determine why someone unfollowed you.

I'm working on a project that is going to need beta testers and I've already lined up a few qualified ones with Twitter (and with Blellow, which is sort of a business-minded version of Twitter). I've exchanged programming advice with a few people and I've received some excellent information (or rather links to excellent advice) on some patent and copyright issues I was unsure about. And I'm dying to come up with a project for the Twitter API, but all of the good ones seem to be built already!

I've also made some local friends - I've even been invited to the Hawaii Geek Picnic next weekend!

Once you get active on Twitter, there are lots of others ways to increase not only your followers, but more importantly, your standing with the ones you have (don't underestimate this).

You can find tools and plugins to integrate Twitter with Facebook, you blog, your websites, and your email.

Watch for a lot more Twitter giveaways popping up, and different software that automates it for you, but is built around the same premise.
