Well, having started to autofollow people on Twitter I've now stopped that altogether... I was getting too many people, who couldn't be bothered to put up even an avatar and in quite a few cases not even one tweet.

I'm also heartily sick of getting people's autoresponses when I do follow them that just say 'Hi, thanks for the follow now buy this, etc'

I really don't think there is much point having thousands of followers on Twitter just for the sake of it.

I feed my blog and lenses in there, the rest of the time, it's topical news stories and rock vids. Guess which gets the most clicks?

This is a great tip - I've been doing this for my twitter accounts too - however I'm surprised you're getting away with adding 400 more per day. I got suspended for 1 week - accused of aggressive following.

After chatting with the support person, she said about 100 per day was the max. But maybe she was trying to reign me in a bit on the following. I just tried the twitter karma trick last night and freed up 500 spots of those who weren't following me back.

Twitter does work great - I sent out about 15 tweets over 2 days of the results I was getting using a piece of software to get top ten google rankings in less than 24 hours - and made 2 sales of the software through its affiliate program. That's with only about 1700 followers. Twitter is awesome!

I followed this advice and it really has worked wonders!! I don't feel I compensated on the quality of followers either because they're all in my niche and we have some great conversations and I'm learning so much! And hopefully sharing something with them as well.

You can think of twitter like a game you only play 5 minutes at a time, and during those 5 minutes you have to say something that is of value to other people (which could be to point to a cool link for something) + respond to someone(s)' tweets that you like, follow 1-2 tweeps, and be as clever/witty/charming/real as possible.

Some people don't like that game. But I do.

Now I have to close the gap with the last 190 tweeple to get to the next level so I can follow more tweeple whose posts I really value; it's been so sad not to be able to follow more than 2000 as new tweeple come online -- like a lot of the warriors here, for instance :-)

But does it work? Depends on what you're using it for. I've gotten sales, clients, JV partners, and some of the absolute best info anywhere + breaking news flashes (I even scooped one myself one day -- rare thing.)

So yeah, I guess I'm a twitter addict. (Err, would that make me a twiddict???)

I am glad to see people who do make this work for them enter the thread and report on their success. I have not tried any twitter marketing but now I think I will add this to my list of things to try. Without a list of new things to try, I would soon become bored with internet marketing. I used this technique, but poor Twitter Karma starts to struggle as your follower count increases.

I've developed some software to do this, it runs automatically, is gentle on the twitter API and got me 600+ followers in 3 days. I set up a profile on june 4, Rob (tweeple_adder) on Twitter and ran twitter adding/posting software that I've created. On the sixth day I'm up to 1,199 followers and I don't have to do a thing to maintain the account.

It works a treat, doesn't upset Twitter and by the end of the month I should have 5,466 followers according to twittercounter.com.

I've even made several sales, not bad considering the product, website and twitter account were all created less than a week ago! This has to be the fastest sales generating technique that I've used to date.

Great info Todd. When I started using twitter I clicked on quite a few of other peoples' followers to get me going and then got to the stage where I had about 400 that were not following me so have just sorted that out with Twitter Karma! Very useful tool thx.

What were you trying to sell to them? I honestly don't find Twitter to be a great way to make affiliate sales. I get all of my press release clients from Twitter, though, so I do find Twitter to be extremely valuable - just not for affiliate sales. I occasionally sell my own info-products on Twitter, too.

Here's the real truth with Twitter in the IM space...

If you have 10,000 so called followers, you really have about 250 (if you are lucky) people paying any attention to what you are saying.

Just check out the Twitpic stats on any marketer if you don't believe me.

In addition to Twellow.com, I recommend you check out WeFollow: A User Powered Twitter Directory to find people to follow based on topic.

I you find people that talk about topics that interest you, when they do follow you back they will be more likely to stay if you have something in common.

Twitter is not a sales site . It is a great site to build your email list from. I have never tried to make a real direct sale on twitter . I have made a lot of sales from the email list it has built

A lot of the information in this post is old . If you have under 2000 followers , 400 new ads will get you at least noticed if not banned . I am over the mark with several accounts and I never try to ad over 300 a day .

Jason is correct on the 10,000 to 250 ratio. The ratio stays pretty much the same but out of the 250 around 175 will be the same people (just run a tracker, the raw hits are the same ones ) . That gives you 75 new eyeballs .

Your mass unfollows will get you inas much if not more trouble than the mass follows.

Yes twitter karma does kind of stink but it is worth every dime I paid for it (even though it no longer works on some of my accounts )

If there is a lesson to be learned here . Capture all the twitter followers you can on an email list . Although I don't see it going anywhere in the near future if it does just go away, the list you build from it will still be yours .

Looks like there is a daily limit. Does anyone prefer manual versus automated options? What are the pros and cons?

If after a couple days or even a week then you can stop following them.

This will allow you to get past the 2000 mark that are following you and take you to that next level on Twitter.

One more thing. People ask can you make money with twitter? The answer is absolutely. You have to market twitter with care so you don't turn-off your followers. Twitter is one of the best marketing places since Ebay.

Click on "Settings" there is a place for 1 line bio, this is where you put your info in. You can use up to 160 characters in your bio, make them count your potential customers usually read this.
It is also important to put a picture in, they like to know who they are dealing with.
A good background will make a difference in the number of followers you get as well. Using one of the twitter background identifies you as a newbie. You can get a custom background from MrBackground for $27, it's worth it. Go to the search button at the bottom of the twitter page and search for MrBackground and send an @ message or a direct message and tell them what you want. You can usually get it within a few hours.
