Awesome WP Trick I Learned on My Aquarian Birthday!

Today's my birthday and for the FIRST TIME in a minute I am HAPPY to say I'm another age.

2010 a year from hell at first, but it taught me a LOT of things. I'm more assertive, and really soft-hearted, and even though I kinda knew it (but didn't feel it) ... LOVED for who I am by genuine people.

MUSHY THINGS ASIDE!!!

Okay, I just totally figured out some awesome stuff!
I installed Shopperpress within another Wordpress installation of my root domain, so that I can keep my selected theme for the "content" portion of the site while maintaining a configurable, professional e-commerce look for the affiliate products.

Now people I know say I "do too much", right?

Basically, before this, I would make subdomains on my sites and got overwhelmed and never finished any.

On this particular site, I imported a lot of items via Shopperpress then changed themes. I had a million published posts but they were ugly and useless because they weren't automatically configured to embed ids, etc. In other words, I was preparing to edit a million posts one by one.

So I said to myself, "Self, you're doing too much."

Self responded, "You're right. There HAS to be a way to make the site look official without the need for a subdomain. You know, how other sites have different sections like www.Site.com/subsite , and the subsite looks totally different?"

In other words, instead of :

shop.site.com

I could make

www.site.com/shop

and keep everything under the same domain.

So Self then said, after a moment of contemplation, "Wait! If we create a page, then all we need to do is reinstall Wordpress on the directory subfolder, and it shouldn't disturb the root contents, kind of like how you put new pics in a subfolder on your computer and it doesn't disturb the overall folder itself!"

She looked at me with a devilish grin, complete with wiggling eyebrows. "Shall we try....?"

I said, "Self, you're going HAM right now! Let's do this!"

We we did...

And guess what?!

IT WORKED!

Now, hopefully, my site will get the benefits of ALL those items for SEO, and easily have a large footprint within the search engines, because in my experience (and mine may be different from others'), subdomains are still treated like separate domains in a sense, so you still kind of have to undergo the indexing process all over again. Now, hopefully, it will index quicker.

The BEST part of my discovery?

You can possibly mix and match CMS systems, forums, classifieds, etc --- and make an easier SQUEEZE page for your info products, as long as you create a new "subfolder" in the main URL that matches to Wordpress.

I haven't tried this yet but this opens up a whole new set of possibilities, because before this, I would have been hoping someone made a plugin or a theme that did this without going crazy with CSS (I'm not that advanced!)

Aw yeah!

PS. If you knew this already, sorry, I didn't and several people I knew didn't. So just gimme a thumbs up for the mini lightbulb, no matter how late I am !

    Happy Birthday.

Mines on the 25th and I had a crappy 2010 too.

    Must be our star sign.

Loving this post, very interesting concept.

Think I might give it a go.

I am still confused regarding what your "discovery" was...

That you can have a WP installation in each subfolder (subdirectories) of a site? - That's a pretty well-known setup used by tons of WP bloggers.

Actually, since WP 3.x.x. you don't even need to install WP again and again and again... just use the MS (multi site) feature built in it and have zillion WP sites by one click
    example.com/site1
    example.com/site2
    etc.

I'm pretty old school with Wordpress and am not good at "code" ... and I don't keep up with the changes to the updates, so yea I'm really behind in that feature. Thanks. I'll play with it in another website and see what happens.

Funnily enough this has nothing to do with WP but when I started my first few websites I actually installed one complete website for a property I was promoting as a subdomain on another website.

I cannot even remember submitting this site with the subdomains too Google, I was keeping it as a sort of backup site should one go down. The two sites hosted on separate servers for this reason.

What I did find was somehow Google found the site and indexed it. I only found this out when I was doing a search on Google. So whilst I did not intentioanlly set out to do this I see how it can work. Now I see lots of subdomains in the listings when searching Google.

If things are finally looking up for us aquarians that is definately a good sign to me. For it has been a rough couple of years since I was laid off in late october from my full time land surveyor job. Luckly for me though I took the extra money I could from unemployment and started my online business. It has not been the best business yet but it has been steadily increasing in profits every single year so I am hoping this is my best year ever as so many others.

Lol, these new star charts are ridiculous... I personally heard it only applies to those born in 2009, but we'll see. I was born on the cusp anyway. Lol.

@ the bolded: I totally understand what you mean. I read Rich Dad, Poor Dad when before I was 21 and quickly realized why employment was not for me. Unfortunately it wasn't until a few years later that I realized, I can only be employed on my terms. It is hard, but I honestly think so many of us - people, not just Aquarians - will have to demonstrate an ability to work 50-11 jobs, or become self-employed and entrepreneurial in some manner.

          Good luck!

If you find the multiple install idea attractive, you really should try this. The MS functionality is much more practice for this sort of thing.
Happy belated. Yes, I'll definitely put some time aside to look into it. I was geeked for a whole day.

Yes subdomains are currently getting indexed just as well as regular domains. I wonder however, how an email address to a subdomain would look and fly over with email servers. Lol.. and how long it will take before exact match keyword subdomains begin to get some play from internet marketers.
