If you have to ask...

If you find yourself wondering about the quality of what you are doing (emails, articles, videos, blog comments, doing shots of liquor), then the quality probably isn't high enough. Here's a really silly test that works really well:

If you wouldn't be comfortable telling the owner of the site that you did it (face to face!), then don't post it.

If you produce quality content, traffic and backlinks will come naturally ON TOP OF WHAT YOU DO. Want proof? Look at all of the 'guru' sites, or any other big site in any industry.... do they do backlinking? I'm sure that they do. However, by producing very high quality content they let their readers do a lot of the work for them. Much much faster than spinning everything related to your keyword all over the universe, and much less tedious as well.
  • Some good points. I've always tried to over produce with my products. E.g. if you give something away for free, create it as if you were going to charge $50 for it. The guys that pick it up for free will be amazed and probably take on board what you are telling them.

I have to disagree here. Some people are extremely hard on themeselves when deciding if something is good enough or of high quality. I had a problem with this exact issue. To help my self not get stuck in self judgement I had to define what "quality" meant for me. I had to create some objective measurable definition I could use to evaluate my own work.

So what I did was model and adapt the Google philosophy. Quality for me means providing a good user experince and delivering on any claims or promises I make in a clear easy to under stand manner.

I have checklist that I'm still developming to help me measure this. The point of my reply is just to point out things are not so cut and dry for a lot of people. In the past I have produced things that others have thought where high quality, but I felt were not good enough. Hence me reason to figure out a way to be objective and honest with my self...

I agree, some people are too perfectionist, but far more publish spun crap. It needs to deliver to the reader, and over deliver if possible. That's all :-) (and be readable)

Please give me an example of a marketing guru site with high quality content.

I suspect that squeeze pages and massive PPC budgets play a greater role in the 'guru's' success.

I agree with virtually everything you said here, Sean. Your test of quality is very good.

The one thing I'll disagree with is "guru quality". What they really provide is a very high quality EXPERIENCE.

Think about Frank Kern, Ryan Deiss, Ed Dale, or any of your other "gurus". The number one factor which separates them from the pack is not "quality content", but taking you along on their EXPERIENCE. You become involved in their personality, their way of teaching, and often overlook the faults in their content. (Ed Dale enjoys pointing out the fact he makes plenty of errors.)

They have created rabid fans who tweet, re-tweet, comment on Facebook, talk about them in forums, and blog about them constantly because of the experience they provide. Quality may be a part of the experience, but I'll argue it has much more to do with personality and having made a conscious decision to create a PERSONA.

Combine Quality and building your own Identity or Persona will make the biggest difference.

I can even think of one example in this thread, yourself. You use good quality content, but you have started creating an identity and persona by expressing yourself with conviction. It is the level of confidence and conviction you carry in your message which results in people who will search for your posts.

    Take care,

    Barry
