Your hosting service will probably have some legal and financial liability. The security issue was not just "unfortunate" or anything... they did not keep your site secure due to negligence perhaps. From the forum in your link, they seem to be saying they had back-ups, but did not protect those either. That is not a "best business practice" for hosting companies.

You could be compensated for the cost of rebuilding, lost revenue, etc. You might want to consult with an attorney.

  I agree, I relied on a online backup once, never doing that again, I lost everything in WP and had to go into google cache and copy/paste all my articles again!

You just back it up to the hard drive on your computer.

If it is a simple HTML site, you just FTP it from your host to your hard drive. Ask your hosting company about FTP.

If you are using WordPress or Joomla, you need to copy your files and your MySql data.

Contact your hosting company. Virtually all have the steps required in their help section. Here is a sample from one hosting company: cPanel Tutorial - How to create a backup of your site?

I use Xsite pro and a nice function is that it reminds you to do backups. I do one to my 'C' drive and another to an external hard drive. You could also use a flash drive or and even burn one to a cdr or cdrw.

It's like insurance for your business that's for sure and we can't get this reminder often enough.

I'm sorry this happened to your sites, it must be horrible.

I sold a site late last year for $1000 to a client of mine. I recently noticed her site was no longer there. She called hosting and they have no record of it! She's trying to get to the bottom of what happened but there is no doubt something happened to her site.

She didn't know to backup her database and had no backup but luckily I still had the database on MY hosting account and all the site files in my account too so we were able to do a full restore. Obviously we need to know why and how it got cleared though.

So this is a very timely reminder.

iThemes has a plugin called Backup Buddy that's supposed to automatically backup everything for you, I'm thinking I may try that so I don't need to do it manually every time.

Yeah, this is a total pain. If you're in internet marketing and you don't backup your websites, it's like running a brick & mortar business without any insurance. You're just screwed if something goes wrong.

I've moved everything over to a different host and I'm slowly piecing everything back together again. Luckily, google's cache was able to save a lot of what I didn't have backed up. This could have been a lot worse; none of my sites are very old yet and I can recover everything, eventually.

Make backups, people. If you haven't been making them, make one right now. If you don't know how, Google it and figure it out. You'll thank me later.

The best way to backup the files and databases that I have tried is
Backup-Smart.com. This was sold on the WSO forum about 2 years ago. It backs up to your computer. Of course, periodically, you ought to also back those files up to something outside your computer. Such as a disc(s) or external harddrive. Then, keep that backup in another place such someone else's house or your home or office. You just don't want to keep everything in one place physically. If you have a fire and your computer burns up, so will your external hard drive if it is sitting next to it.

A good idea is to get one of the flash drives and put your most critical files on it. Keep that on your keychain.

It doesn't really matter how you do it as long as you make a plan and take the time to make your backups. If you think that takes too much of your time, just wait til you lose it all one day and have to start from nothing. And, it is inevitable that you will have a loss one day.
