Eliciting the Structure of Experts in IM - For the Big Thinkers

In studying NLP, I got turned on to modeling.

Modelling: The act of eliciting unconscious (or conscious) processes of the brain from effective people.

Using those processes to get similar results.

In other words, it's about looking for effective thinking patterns in successful people, and then installing them into your mind.

In the case of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), the Co-creators (Richard Bandler, John Grinder), would install these "winners processes," into people's minds with the help of hypnosis.

Very cool stuff.

How does it relate?

I'm a part of a new breed of entrepreneur - Free Agent Entrepreneur. That means multiple streams of income, massive free time to be a serial creator, and effective strategies by which to elicit the structure of things, to find out how they actually work. I'm not a millionaire, or even a hundred thousandaire, but I have been called "extremely effective at figuring things out." It's because I look at things from a radically different perspective.

In this case, the experts of IM and Blogging

This is a process I use to draw out traits, characteristics, mental processes and more from highly effective individuals:

1. How do their minds work? You want to, through studying their writing, elicit their beliefs and philosophies. Obviously, experts believe both in the mission they are engaged in, and their ability to successfully hit targets. Their philosophies help them to navigate the land of their niche and be effective at it. For example, an underachiever or someone who isn't particularly effective in a certain area, may think that it's time to give up after 9 consecutive tries because God, or some outside force is showing them that it's not meant to be. Is this true? No, it's a philosophy. Philosophies shape the human mind, most of the time at an unconscious level. On the other end of the spectrum, the Elite have philosophies that allow them to try hundreds of different things, until they get desirable results. Study their language to find out what their philosophies and beliefs are, and condition your mind to have a similar mental model.

2. What makes them effective? When I was studying Eben Pagan, I was able to identify a couple key things that I believe makes him effective. First, he's a high information person, like we talked about earlier. Second, he's what I call “psychology conscious,” a must in the online world. Third, he knows people. That doesn't mean he “has connections,” that means he understands human beings. I've heard him say, and I'm paraphrasing, “I knew that in order to be successful, I had to understand people.” Start to wonder about what makes people effective. Once you've identified what you believe it is, implement it into the way you think, and the way you do things.

3. What are they doing that gets them results? Read their information products, read all of their blog posts and get as much into their stuff as possible. What are they doing? Do they post once a day? Are their posts mini projects? How much value do they provide? Do they include images in all of their posts, and of what? Do they do videos? If they're putting themselves out there and doing media (videos and interviews), how do they communicate? What do they do with their eyes? How do they move their body? What do they do with their tone? These are the kinds of questions that give you access to what makes people great. I've studied effective people for about two years now.

Dude, you need to shave. And didn't you play bass for Oasis?

All kidding aside. Good post and it's a subject that I need to start studying more myself. Effective and subliminally persuasive communication, triggering impulses in buyers.

You mention Eben Pagan, and something you'll notice about his websites... they aren't like everybody else's (squeeze/sales pages) yet they guy is hugely successful. His approach is very soft sale, even his emails. But it works.

Ok, you sucked me in with your title, but don't start patting yourself on the back just yet

I'm hoping my comments below help to add an extra bit of dimension to an already great thread.

I bolded the sentence above because it's immeasurably important to understand that if you fall into the trap of seeking out other's philosophies to shape your own mind, you'll be missing out on the true power here. That power comes from turning your sentence around and using your mind to shape your own philosophy; a philosophy uninhibited by the limits of others.

It's that truly independent thinking that allows you to stand outside the crowd and see how and why they do and think what they do.

More powerful still, is the ability to communicate your own philosophy in a way that inspires others. That's the key to great leadership, and great marketers are great leaders in their own rite.

What Eben Pagan said, especially the "I knew" part (italics) is powerful and inspiring. Your "I believe" and "you believe" is not. What you believe is not inspiring. It's like saying "I think..."

To be really effective, like Eben, you need to communicate power, not opinions.

Excellent post. I've copied and saved it to refer back to later because the questions make a great blueprint for studying people.

      Good post.

There is a phrase in NLP which runs: "the difference which makes a difference"

We're all different, but what are the actual things that effective people do differently?

You ask: "What are they doing that gets them results?"

That's the key question. Thousands of people are posting blogs, making videos, putting up squeeze pages .... but only a few are making money.

What are the things within those pages, blogs, videos, and so on which are "the difference which makes a difference"?

It's often the very small details which make the difference -- like placing the results which they offer as the first benefit, the typeface used, the colour of the page and the font ....

Studying effective people shows that they all do some things which all effective people do... Those are the things which make a difference.

When a pattern emerges and they are ALL doing one thing -- that's the thing to copy
