Email solution for multiple notebook?

I have multiple notebooks.

And, I use various pop and web mails.

Currently using Outlook on my main notebook.

But I am trying to find a solution where I have access to all my emails on multiple notebooks.

Other than the obvious webmail solution, are there other methods?

If you just want to *check* email on multiple notebooks, you could set up outlook on the other notebooks to fetch emails but leave a copy on the server. Then when you check on your main notebook, it will still be on the server for download.

If you want access to all emails including those downloaded on other notebooks, that's a little more complicated (synchronizing folders or using an exchange server, beyond my expertise to explain in a few words).

    Hope this helps,
    Art

Hi! Switch your Outlook to use IMAP. That will keep email on the server and allow you to sync it easily across multiple computers. Most web hosting providers and even some free email providers offer IMAP as an option. It should be free -- if it's not, switch providers.

IMAP automatically backs up your email on the server. When you delete a message on any computer, or file it in a server-side folder, then Send/Receive on another computer, it automatically syncs all of those changes.

I've said it before and I will say it again -- NO BUSINESS OWNER should be using POP3 these days! POP3 + "leave messages on server" is an ugly IMAP-like hack. Switch to IMAP and then just ensure that the email is backed up by your provider and/or that you are doing regular server backups, and you'll never have to worry about email with multiple computers again!

Thanks Art, actually i am already using that method. But i the problem is one need to download the emails on the other notebooks before the main notebook, else the emails get deleted from the server. Another method is to use forwarding, but this comes with it's own problem, which is setting the reply email and name to use.

Erica, thanks too. I am exploring the IMAP method. I am currently using the previous version of Outlook. I am checking out on email clients like Thunderbird, Zimbra etc. Which email client do you recommend?

      Hi Success,

I use Outlook 2007. Works great with IMAP!

Also, if you don't have the latest version, Trustprice (Software Wholesale you trust - Buy 100% Genuine Software at Cheap, Discounted Price | TRUSTprice) is the BEST place to buy legitimate Microsoft software (also Adobe, etc.) It will save you hundreds of dollars over other places.

        Thanks Erica,

I have successfully imported my Outlook pst and archive pst into Thunderbird.

I have also solved the backup issue. By creating Local Folders in Thunderbird, I can move the emails from the IMAP inbox onto the pc, so I can have copies of the emails for backup and can delete those on the IMAP inbox.

Now, I have access to all my archive emails and latest emails on multiple notebooks.

    Hi,

Looks like Erica has provided you with a solution.

What I do and recommend is to have your main desktop system accessible through your router (office or home) by using a variety of methods (Remote Desktop Connection or something like LogMeIn online service) so that you can not only handle your e-mail but run other programs remotely either from one of your notebooks or any internet connection (Internet Cafe).

Sounds complicated but it is not and gives you a lot more options.

      Thanks Brian,

Yes, I am looking into that area too. My personal vision is to go the fully mobile route with multiple laptops and desktops; to be able to work and access my "workstation" on whichever pc I am on.

The first thing to adjust is email. IMAP is ideal for this.

The second is applications and data files.

With applications, we can install the applications on the various workstations.

With data files, this is solved by using a portable HDD. I will plug in my HDD to whichever notebook or desktop I am using and work on the files in the drive. I got a Ranger 320g SATA HDD for this.

So with any notebook, IMAP and my portable HDD, I have access to all my latest emails and files.

Thanks for suggesting the remote computing option. I will look into it.
