How much should I charge for this?

I was just wondering what the going rate for web design for small businesses is?

I am thinking of offering a service to local small businesses to get their business online and start promoting it.

Here are the services I would provide:
  • Complete web design including graphics
  • Page creation taken from their text and images (Or I provide content for extra cost)
  • SEO to garuntee first page of google for their main keyword
  • Free technical support and advice for a year

Just want to know how much I should be charging realistically. I will be going cheaper than normal as I don't have a portfolio as such yet. Is it per page or.. what?

Help a brother out here!

If you charge $500 a month at least you are providing a awesome service at incredibly cheap prices. They will love you

That seems a bit expensive. I was looking for more a 1 time cost for producing the website and getting it to page 1 for them.

My response disappeared when I tried to post

What I had said is that don't undersell yourself. $500 is too cheap. $500 monthly is acceptable but not too high (depends upon a number of factors like what competition you are talking about, what sort of business it is, where are they operating from etc). I would suggest a lot more than that.

And yes you could take your first client cheap simply to showcase your talents. But it stops there.

I'd recommend not less than $2,000 for that kind of service ($5,000 would be better but that depends on how big of a city you're working in). I've tried charging less for similar services and every time I've come to regret it - cheap clients just don't appreciate your time and they're still every bit as demanding (sometimes moreso) as more expensive ones so just avoid the bottom of the barrel clients.

      Thanks for the advice.

Currently the city I'm targeting only probably gets roughly 100 searches/month for say the city and plumber (if I was to target a plumber). I assume that would be cheaper because of the low search volume.

Also wondering if you can break down the costs for me. For example, how much would the website cost itself and how much would the SEO cost.

      Thanks for your help.

I'm currently in the same situation as you. I've found that in getting a few clients under my belt I was able to see what sort of work was required and I was able to price it up from there.

I would tend to target people with money (offline is great for this i.e. breakfast meetings and networking events), rather than try to lower your prices too much.

Just get your hands dirty and price as you go along
