Question. I have Wordpress on a domain of mine, but I want to install a second Wordpress blog for another purpose on the same domain. I also want to password protect access. Can I do these two things? Thanks. |

Yes and yes. You can just setup a different database for the second blog. That way there isn't any conflict with any plugins you may be using that create database tables. You can password protect individual posts and pages as you write them on the write post/page page. |

Yes: But think of one thing: It depends on the name of your domain... as you will need to consider your visitors' taste and perception. If the name of the domain is vague and you have two niches or products on it as blogs, then generate traffic to the specifics, then its ok. |

Steve, You can as mention before just use a different database and either put it in a subdomain or in a different directory. I have 3 wordpress blogs on my domain 2 live and one as a test blog where i upload new plugins first to test and also wordpress upgrades to test the compatibility with my blog. Last thing i want to happen is my blog to crash. Regards, Geoff |

Hi Steven, Yes this is possible.. Create a 2nd database, never use the same database as wordpress suggest as it not only can mess up with certain plugins but its a security risk. So create a 2nd database and then do the install of the blog as normal choosing whatever subfolder you wish to use. Pass protection is handled by .htaccess but I since you have cpanel with hostgator just login your control panel and click on password protect directories link and once on the next page click on the "link" of the subfolder you want to protect. On the next screen it will ask you to add a username/password. once done you will see a checkbox and a small field to enter text. Check the box and add whatever text you want to show on the password protect popup and click on save. James |

As usual, you are all just the greatest. I am so grateful for the help that I've gotten from everybody since coming here. This sounds like something simple enough that even I can't screw it up. ![]() Thanks all. |

I use dreamhost as they have a one click install for wordpress blogs (I setup 2 last night). I use subdomains to do the trick then link them however necessary so they flow together. So... blog1.site.com blog2.site.com blog3.site.com it's very easy and you can preface the database table with a unique code like: blog1_ or blog2_ etc. Then all blogs can live in a single database and be controlled by a single user with the same permissions (not required, but makes management easier sometimes). Dreamhost makes it easy, though I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to use wordpress' actual install script on your own domain/hosting company. Actually after I bought your trends WSO last night, I was thinking of the easiest way to do this same thing so I can have a single, short domain, and use the exact keyphrase I wanted as a subdomain. I'll dig into it on Monday when I report back to you ![]() WSMdomains.com has a list of expired domains, and I wrote a program to filter them by the shortest, but also, Domain Name Generator & Search. Find Name Ideas for your Website or Business. Bulk Check, Create & Register Available Web Domain Names can help you find a very short and cool, brandable domain name. Message me if you want the program link, but makewords.com is likely a better tool anyway. Want a Dreamhost Deal? 'FreeWWW4Life' as a promo code at dreamhost will get you an additional free, lifetime domain name (they pay for it every year). I bought their 3 year plan for $7 a month and they gave me unlimited disk, bandwidth, users, subdomains, domains, etc. One of my accounts with them has 13GB of data on it I have a "family only" promo code too that gives 5 free lifetime domain names, and 1 free dedicated IP address as well as huge bandwidth and disk space. I'd be willing to trade something good for the promo code, even a lump sum. Considering domain names are $10 a year (10x5=$50), and a dedicated ip is $4 a month (4x12=$48) that's a $98 a year savings and the total remaining bill ends up as $7 a month for all that (and unlimited storage / bandwidth). Here is my affiliate link for dreamhost, if you are going to simply buy it without a promo code: Web Hosting by DreamHost Web Hosting: Web Sites, Domain Registration, WordPress, Ruby on Rails, all on Debian Linux! (it routes to Dreamhost). I only push dreamhost here because it does what you are trying to do easily, and it's incredibly cheap - plus I love their service (since Feb 2006). I won't insult your intelligence to try and hide the fact it's an affiliate link too. |

Steven I have been through the exact same situation as yourself and I agree with the advice given re setting a new database etc etc. The problem I had was how time consuming this all proved to be especially with setting up the new database, plugins and widgets that you would normally use. It may be worth your time having a look at these guys who recently had a WSO promoting their product Expert Wordpress. I use it and it makes the whole setup process much easier plus it is more secure and will be fully SE Optimized. Heres the link to their sales page and video demo. Expert Wordpress - Create A blog Hope this is helpful Regards Grahame |

Here is something that may help simplify this for you. Copy all the folders and page from your blog folder on your PC and ftp them to a new folder on the domain and edit the config to the new user name password of the DB for that folder/blog. You then open the index page for the new blog and do your set up. I don't like installing the blog from cpanel. I also got the next version of WP secure and highly recommend it. |

Steven, I have messed around with this idea. Here are some thoughts. As I understand the theory, if you set up different WP blogs (with different MySQL databases) on different directories, links to the children will favor the mother blog. If you use a subdomain, that is like using a different domain except you don't have to buy it. But no automatic link juice to mama from links to the kids. I don't know the effect of interlinking them. I presume that kids link to mama, but mama doesn't link to kids is the best approach to get mama up there on SERPS, even if you use subdomains. If you are going to keep your different blogs, either is a good option depending on what your organization needs are. But flipping them is out without a real headache. Michael |
