Facebook Phasing Out FBML

It's bad news for all the Fan Page and Application Developers out there but it looks like it's all going to be iframe from now on! Even on Page tabs!

I really hope they rethink this or at least keep FBML but encourage iframes.

I understand that hosting and using FBML would cost a lot of money for them but FBML is their language. I would hate to see it go..

What are your thoughts?

    Hi Matt,

I think with iframe we will be able to do more than we can do currently in FBML.

iFrames are MUCH better! There is a way to use iFrames already within the FBML, but very few people take advantage of it.

Hi personally I never saw the point of FBML, why create a system just for Face book.

FBML gave us a lot of functions that the iframe will not. Just take a look at the Facebook Developers wiki.

I do think it'll be great to have iframes allowed on Fan Page Tabs though Ultimate freedom!

iFrames are already allowed. Do some Googling. I will paste some code if I can dig it up.

I was under the impression that iframes weren't allowed in static FBML custom tabs?

I don't care which one Iframe or FBML as long as I have full control of how I display my content Here is my Page.

there is nothing to worry over. the news, from Facebook...

from Facebook -> Facebook Platform Roadmap Update - Facebook Developers

By the end of this year, we will no longer allow new FBML applications to be created, so all new canvas applications and Page tabs will have to be based on IFrames and our JavaScript SDK. We will, however, continue to support existing implementations of the older authentication mechanism as well as FBML on Page tabs and applications.
so things like the very cool 'visible to connection', the modal popup
dialog, and the flv player, etc will still be available.

though keep in mind that this is what they are saying right now,
there is always the possibility that they could change it up later on ...

        KEY (eric)

ps - iFrames are allowed by creating an application and running the code
into the app, and then adding it to your page. currently a bit too much
effort if all you want is a standard html.

        • So it's a non-issue? Just no new FBML, but the old ones are still going to be fine.

Where did you get the app for the "Send Page Name Invitation" on the bottom of your page?

FBML is basically a fancy way of saying html. It doesn't matter about the move to iframes, because there's always going to be someone who's an expert at whatever they do.

FBML will still work, but no new features for it in the future.

FB wants us to use iframes instead of FBML, also for pages. Search on FB developers for more information how to create iframe pages.

The best thing about using iframes is we can use everything we want like lightbox etc. No restrictions like FBML.

Although they're "Phasing FBML Out" ... my understanding
is that they're still supporting old FBML created pages?

I feel sorry for those people who have tried to make a living off of coding FBML for people. Now any old webs designer will be able to create fanpages.

I'd say any old web designer already could.

FBML is just HTML with some restrictions.

The new iframe setup is going to allow us to do a lot, lot more and fre developers from the extremely poor and restrictive facebook admin area for dealing with fan pages.

I think it's a change for the better and personally, I can't wwait to start creating new stuff for it :-)

"On March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app."

-Introducing iframe Tabs for Pages - Facebook Developers

That second part seems to seal the deal. I'm assuming a little html should still work? I'd like that too.

I do Agree with Matt though. Why would you deliberately kill off your own language? and it was the fastest growing language ever! Oh well.

I like this shift towards iFrames as well - this provides you so much more flexibility and freedom when designing a FB page.
