Anyone have experience with TV/Radio commercials?

Hello Warriors!

My business partner and I are wanting to experiment with TV and radio commercials to promote our internet marketing product this year. The product converts very well online and really has helped people so we want to bring it to a brand new audience. We can relate with a lot of people in our city and believe if we can get our message out there we can sell our product and help a ton of people in this economy.

I would really like to just hear any Warriors experience in this area.

Anything like:

-How much should we be expecting to spend for both radio and TV
-Best way to negotiate with their advertising department
-Best times and days to run our commercials
-Was it successful for you?

We have been very successful at advertising online but we know this is a whole new arena. Any response is definitely appreciated!

Thanks Warriors!

Best regards,
Michael

Price depends on market, time of day, and what show the commercials are aired during.

They aren't going to negotiate with you much, they have their rates. Salespeople like their commissions. It's all they really care about.

Best time depends on your target audience. Also keep in mind what shows people watch live (the view, oprah, news, syndicated) and what shows people tivo and skim through the commercials. If it's a tivo show, you could be wasting money.

    • Radio marketing is easy, affordable and reaches quite a large audience.

You should make an effort to target niche radio stations that cater to medium sized audiences to keep the price low while achieving maximum return on investment.

I've produced television commercials but have not used them for my current business.

Honestly, you can expect to spend thousands maybe even tens of thousands of dollars depending upon the nature of the commercial (production costs) plus the advertising fees. It's too hard to give a closer ballpark figure; it truly depends on your geographic area and the station you select and its package.

Keep your production costs low without sacrificing quality. So many people blow their budget on hiring a huge crew and then don't have the funds to give it the air time it truly needs.

      Good luck!

Actually, Google TV ads uses an online service to produce your own tv ads - its at Online Video Ads, TV Ads and Video Marketing - SpotMixer and you can use their premade templates to produce an ad for around $200+ if I remember right.

    Hey Michael,

I've done a bit of testing with radio last summer with mixed results. There's actually two types of radio....

    1. The traditional radio that you listen to in the car,
    2. The newer internet streaming versions of these radio broadcasts, plus internet radio per se'.

My personal experience is that the internet option offered by traditional radio seems to work better. People can listen to it at work, and if they hear something they like, they can switch over to the browser and click on your link for more info.

On the other hand, we ran one test project on traditional radio that yielded exactly zero click thrus. If I took that same amount of money and sent it to Google Adwords, I would've had over 1000 visitors. But if you think about it, when you're listening to the radio, driving down the road for example, you aren't in a position to take action relative to your ad. So from my viewpoint, the PPC promotional model versus the crapshoot of radio or tv is the issue. At least with the PPC method, if you don't get any visitors, you don't pay. I will never go back to traditional radio again for promo purposes.

TV can be a similar can of worms, but there's different dynamics going on here. First of all if you're watching tv, then you dedicated to watching tv. In other words, you're not necessarily driving down the road at the same time.

Secondly, you now add the sensory capabilities of sight along with sound. Powerful combination.

Third, be sure to check with your cable company. Their technology has changed dramatically during the past 2-3 years. You can now spec a specific ad to run based purely on street location within a single zip code. Consequently you can target your dynamics very tightly. Their pricing model is also very compelling based on a specific show or time of day slot.

Check out Google TV Ads in your Adwords account. You can get cheap TV time on national cable channels. Search my blog for my documented experience.

My commercial drove folks to my website. Didn't get a huge number of hits. Conversions were less. Folks I have talked to get more bang for their buck staying off radio and TV for online only products/services.
