Check out this latest news article from yahoo on firefox and chromes new browser versions.. Should affiliates be worried?

    Really interesting read. Obviously it's not a good news for affiliates if they don't get credited for the sales they make. Hope it doesn't come by default when installing a browser on your computer.

    I guess a solution would be that - let's say Clickbank - log on their server the IP of the visitor and the affiliate account who has refered this lead. If a sale is completed, they check if the IP of the buyer matches an IP in their database, if yes they credit you the sale.

    I can't imagine the size of the database and the cpu resource to handle all this. Clickbank must receive millions of clicks each day...

    No impact at all. The companies have to agree to be part of the opt-out program as well. I doubt companies like Clickbank (that depend on tracking to work) will be jumping up and down to be a part of this.

    Yes thats right, noted this point, "Websites would then decide whether to grant the desire or continue to gather data for purposes such as targeting Internet advertising."

    Hopefully they won't develop new browsers that will by default block out all cookies regardless whether the companies agree to be part of the opt out program or not.

      Google aren't that stupid. They rely on cookies for a lot of their advertising. Retargeting works entirely with cookies.

    Remember, all of the internet giants rely on cookies and tracking visitors... much more so than affiliate marketers. If such measures were put in place, there would definitely be additional measures put in place as well to track sales/trends etc.

    All the more reason to build a list though.

  • If there ever was an 'elimination' of cookies, there are still a number of very easy programmatic ways to track user patterns that is being done by a bunch of companies already.

    It's like going to a grocery store, and them saying they aren't going to manually write out a receipt of what you purchased, and you think 'yay!', when in fact now they are just recording it electronically. (i.e., credit cards).
