2 installs of wordpress

Hello warriors in need of a little technical wordpress help.

I used 2 have a domain hosted on Wealthy Affiliate servers but I am no longer a member of that community. When you leave there your hosting is supposed to be canceled as well.

Its been about a month and I now have host gator account. I recently tried to install wordpress on my domain name that used to be hosted at Wealthy Affiliate.

Everything was going well until I tried to install my theme, I logged into my host gator hosted domain like 3 or 4 times. It wasnt until I tried to change my theme that when I visited my domain that the old site started showing up. I even had to use my old wp log information to access the site when I created completely new info for host gator.

Can anyone tell me whats going on ?

Thanks in advanced.

Sounds like the DNS is still pointing to the Wealthy affiliate server & they still have your site files on the server.

Check the DNS records at host gator associated with your domain & make sure the DNS is changed over to a HostGator dns server.

  • I think maybe you are right, or I am not looking in the right place. Do you know where I could find the dns records at on the HostGator control panel ?

I see to the left it shows where I visited my site where it says website traffic, and it lets me install sub domains on it, and it shows up when I went to install a new wordpress.

    Any suggestions ?

Who is the registrar? You change the nameservers at the registrar, not the host.

I too had a domain Hosted at Wealth Affiliate, When i left WA, my domain remained in their servers, and was unable to transfer it to my new hosting @ hostgator.
But i gave up on that domain, . Are u able to login to WA system? since u left them? If so, u can go to the hosting Cpanel @ WA, and transfer you domain to Hostgator, and change the nameservers to the ones at Hostgator. (they're in the welcome email in ur inbox, when u signed up with their hosting )

Sorry you're having problems, and I hope you get them sorted out. It's small consolation, I know, but at least your situation can serve as a warning to others.

I hope that anyone thinking about using the same company for both hosting and domain registration reads about your misfortune.

I would argue that it has more to do with purchasing your domain from someone ethical and making sure YOU own it and not your hosting company.

I've hosted thousands of web sites and many clients purchased their domains through my reseller account when they set up their site. They own the domain and take it with them if / when they move their hosting.

The problem usually arises when you see "free domain included with hosting" offers. When you read the fine print - the hosting company actually owns the domain so if you want to move you're out of luck.

          True enough...

The trouble is, most people don't even read the large print all the way through, so they never see the fine print until it bites them on the bottom.

Asking who owns the domain should be one of the required questions before taking one of those 'free domain with hosting' deals.

That definitely sounds like a DNS problem to me. You need to go where your domain name is hosted and change the DNS to your new hosting account.

Where did you buy your domain name?

    Talk soon,

Thanks for this important lesson. Now find out if you can buy your domain from the hosting company (don't sound too desperate as the will charge you more!)
