I'm just trying to get started in IM and found out CT is next in proposing bill for Internet Tax Law. From what I heard Amazon hasn't dropped CT affiliates yet but will if/when the law moves closer to being passed.

I'm looking for other ways to get into IM while this mess is sorted out one way or another. I've read people mention to go with Clickbank products or companies in CJ, LinkShare, ShareASale and etc.

I'm confused b/c wouldn't those companies be affected by the new tax laws too? If they all have "affiliate programs" and the affiliate is seen as having "presence" in the state for the company they are promoting then wouldn't that apply to any company not just Amazon?

Looking for silver lining in this mess. What a time to be a newbie.

Clickbank has just been collecting the tax.
For the others, each merchant has their own guidelines and may or may not accept an affiliate in an affected state.

I may be off base, but I believe I read that some states are only aiming the sales tax at physical products and not electronic ones such as e-books. Trying to figure out what each state is doing and what is included is getting ridiculous at this stage. Simple solutions and governments never go hand in hand.

It's because digital downloads like ebooks and other virtual goods largely aren't being taxed, and I forget the reason why exactly. It is about physical goods, and online only merchants - clickbank and others are an exception (and yes, it depends on the state: hosting may be taxed, while ebooks may not be, etc.)

Hey, genius (sorry, couldn't resist), we really try around here not to revive 6-month old threads. Just a FYI.

It does depend on the state. IL tried to aim the law almost specifically to target the bigger operators like Amazon.

Amazon will likely just threaten to drop affiliates if the bill makes it's way through the house/senate of a state. But once it's signed into law, it's all over.

Places like Shareasale and Linkshare have lots of affiliate programs and it will be up to each program manager to decide to drop affiliates in your state. Shareasale encourages them not to but it is their choice. If you sign for 10 programs under Shareasale and then this law passes you could get notification from some or all of them that you have been removed due to the state law.

Hi warriors, does anyone know if there are any issues with becoming an Amazon affiliate if you live in Canada? I have seen some of the comments with issues for some states.

I am in California, and was notified by Amazon that they will not be paying me commissions anymore.
It shows how you should not rely on any one source of income.

If you use skimlinks you can still go through amazon affiliate products because they operate out of the UK.
