Online File Storage? Or Local Networks?

Hi everyone

I don't know if anyone can help with this, but I thought I'd throw it out there and hope for the best! It's been a LONG time since I worked in an office so I have no idea how most people have these things setup...

I'm currently running my online business from an office in Manchester. I employ James as a full time manager, and this means we're always working on files at the same time.

Currently we have a local network setup, and all our files are stored on my PC. James connects to the network and he can then access the files too.

This week I'm having a Mac Book Pro delivered and I'll be working on this in the office. Initially I'd planned to just plug this into the network and work on the files that are currently stored on my old PC.

However, in the afternoons I like to head out into town, find a quiet spot in a coffee shop or bar, and crank out some content.

Does anyone know of a reliable and secure way that I could be working on some of our files on my Mac Book while sat on a beach somewhere (assuming I have Internet connection), and how James could also be accessing the same file in the office?

I'm imagining a world where we both access the files on an online network, or where we both host the files on our computers and then sync up somehow when I return to the office.

Is this possible? In an ideal world I want to avoid having multiple versions of the same file kicking around on portable memory, as I know from experience things get complicated after a week or two.

I have no idea if this question sounds flat out crazy, or if the solution is very simple

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Get an EVDO high speed broadband card for internet connection anywhere.

I am in the boonies in upstate NY right now with no cable, and the card is attached thru my USB and I upload massive amounts of stuff, and download as well and it has been a dream.

I use sprint - you can check the coverage ahead of time.

I'm not sure where you are exactly, but seek out a high speed broadband card and don't rely on coffee shops and have true freedom with your laptop.

It's called VPN. Virtual Private Networks. When traveling, you connect on your laptop using the method ^avenuegirl^ mentioned above. Then you log into the VPN and it will appear as if you're connected locally to the network. This is the standard for all remote connections in corporations.

How do you do it? You'll need a dedicated device that acts like a "NAS" ( network attached storage). Basically, this dedicated server will only store files and it will accept and manage connections. Then you both access them.

What am I talking about? Here's a few examples...this should get your brain gears cranking...

    HP MediaServer
    HP MediaSmart Server (cheaper)
    NewEgg NAS's

The x factor here is the macbook pro. I'm not a mac guy so I don't know about VPN on them but I imagine that it's pretty standard and recognized across all platforms.

Best bet is Dropbox - Home - Secure backup, sync and sharing made easy. - it keeps revisions of all files (so you can always go back in time to grab it), and you can also undelete files. It keeps documents/files synched between computers, it's super-reliable, and free.

I have this too! I can recommend it as well. I believe it's capped at 2gb, though.

The free version is capped at 2GB. You can pay $99/yr to get 50GB.

        That's what I have!
