IM Product Sales Copy

I'm amazed at how much internet marketing product sales copy is full of "are you sick of the guru" type commentary.

I was over at CB wading through the myriad offers, looking for software and tools to promo to a non-IM niche. Kept coming across sales copy filled with mentions of "gurus", "all the hype", "WSO" and other IM buzzwords.

And I'm thinking... unless people are familiar with IM, hostile mentions of gurus and hype, could possibly cause unnecessary questions and objections to the sales process... with no one to answer them.

And then the "3 or more exit pop ups" that give you the feeling they're never going to let you leave that sales page...

I wonder if the writers/owners ever thought "hmmm, we should pull that snarky guru (et al) reference since people outside the IM industry won't relate and we want this to sell as far and wide as possible".

In any case it was hard picking through. Half of the stuff I thought would be cool from reading the title got canned as I started to go through the sales process. I just wouldn't want to send an unsuspecting person into that jungle.

Maybe I'm just being a daft. What are your thoughts?

Most of the products that have anti-guru copy are targeting people that have bought and bought and bought with no results. They are presenting themselves as the new breath of fresh air.

Precisely, you see this all the time in IM and other niches that are crowded.

K, I get that. (Although it leaves more of a "bad breath" impression to me)

What I don't get is why a product owner would choose to limit an affiliate marketing opportunity. I would think they would want a more broad mindset allowing the affiliate to create the segmentation into a narrower niche.

If a product was a bag of flour, in IM, the average product owner would presume it needs to be made into biscuits and only biscuits. ie. The sales copy should be splattered with IM references so only IMers will understand.

In the end it's their lost sales. I just don't get why they'd do that to their potential.

This couldn't be decided unless you know the contents of the course. Many of the IM niche courses might be targeted towards people that have already have their foot in the door.

Some courses are geared towards people that already know the importance of how to build a list or other basic tasks, but just don't know how to champion them. Other courses that are geared towards people that have no knowledge of IM or that places like this exist.

If you mix up the targets, it could result in a lot of refunds.

That makes sense. But most of what I was looking for was tools. The courses would have been more newbie oriented too.

I guess I was a little baffled (and exhausted) because some seemed perfectly suitable as resources to be used outside of the IM Niche.

Ah well. Nobody said IM was easy (written with a bit of humor ).

    I agree.

Guru bashing is lame and just sounds desperate and those bloody popups make me delete the email that sent me to the page - and unsubscribe from the senders list for disrespecting me and my time.

I feel the same about the "this is why you're failing" emails from people that are only after the victim mentality newbies who think they're struggling because "the gurus" aren't shainrg their secrets.

Some people say they deserve everything they get - but I just think it's a shame they're getting abused like a herd of cattle.

It's all so very unprofessionally odd to me.

The word that keeps coming to mind is "shortsighted".

Thank goodness it's not all like that.

I gotta say, Brian is a genius.

I hear you Rashell, but as Brian said, they're targetting a certain group of marketers- the FAILING kind!

Sadly, this is the vast majority of people in IM, so there's always going to be a starving market for it.

Why else would so many JVs involve the IM niche?

Because it's easy money - like shooting fish in a barrel. Find desperate people - tell them they've been misled and that you're the answer - get some friends to say the same - gullible newbies open their wallets.
