Should I Get a WP Template Professionally Designed?

Is this worth it? I plan on running my blog for at least 10 years. How much would it be? Where could I find someone for this? Any ideas on where to find a good template?

I highly recommend you go with one of the big theme companies and not an independent designer.

Check out Studiopress.com and Elegantthemes.com. You could choose one of their themes and then have someone customize the colors, graphics and fonts, so that it looks like your own design.

The advantage is that the person doing the customizing may disappear but the company behind the theme will be there to provide support in the future.

Definitely get a premium theme that comes close to your needs to start with that a reputable company can tweak.

It's a lot easier and quicker for them to start with something than to go from scratch.

Since you'll be investing some money into initially this is a safe bet.

Sell your web-based business for the best price in the shortest amount of time through an experience broker. Reasonable rates, no upfront fees, and no risk to list at AcquisitionStation.com.

Obviously it's upto you. IMHO there are plenty of great, free WordPress themes out there (just the ones on wordpress.org alone are enough for most), that it doesn't justify for someone just starting out to spend money.

Now, if you've got money to spend, and want to start out with a unique look & brand for your blog, then definitely go for it.

Start with something cheap or free, you can always change your theme later.

I can pretty much guarantee that if you are serious about your site, the theme you are using today will not be the same theme you are using 5 or 10 years from now.

Just think about how much the internet has changed in the past 5 - 10 years. Most of us don't have a dancing baby gif on our sites anymore.

The cost is up there, but if you want to stand out its definitely worth it!

Personally, I would go with Thesis, OptimizePress, or something similar. This way you can design what your WP blog looks like yourself without any coding knowledge.

Find a free theme that suits your requirements (ie 1,2, or 3 columns) and then add your own graphics, change colors etc. The best part of a blog(wordpress) is that it is not too difficult to change themes sometime down the track and give your site a new life.

When I'm starting a new blog, I upload several themes that I think are suitable and then activate them in turn to see which one really does the job I'm looking for. When satisfied with one delete the others and get on with personalizing the one I have chose.

Have you tried Atahualpa from BytesForAll? I use it on most of my blogs. It is free and 100% customizable... you can make it look however you want with some simple tweaking.
